: Private Gabriel Young, father of Col. Charles Young, War Department Claim Form (Discharge Certificate) Co. F, 5th Reg. U.S. Colored Infantry. Col. Charles Young, the first African American to reach the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army. In 1918, after being forced into retirement, due to health concerns, he rode on horseback from Wilberforce, Ohio to Washington D.C. to prove his physical fitness for duty.
