Description: Signed portrait of Lucile Atcherson Curtis of Columbus, Ohio, December 1922. Appointed by President Warren G. Harding in 1922, she was the first woman to serve in the United States Foreign Service. Between 1922 and 1927 she served in France, Switzerland and Haiti. She retired from the Foreign Service in 1927 in order to marry George Morris Curtis the following year. Lucile Atcherson Curtis died in Columbus, Ohio on May 9, 1986. View on Ohio Memory.
