Description: Portrait of Samuel S. Cox, ca. 1890-1899. Cox strongly opposed slavery's expansion into new territory during the 1850s. As an Ohioan, he served in the United States House of Representatives from 1857 to 1865. Cox also served New York as a U.S. representative from 1869 to 1885 and from 1887 to 1889. He died in office in 1889. This cabinet card may have been created after his death as a memorial. View on Ohio Memory.
