: Phebe Benedict kept the central station of the Underground Railroad in the Alum Creek Friends' Settlement, Peru Township, Morrow County, Ohio, along with her husband, Aaron. The couple was active in assisting escaping slaves, at one point harboring sixty-one fugitive slaves at their house in a single month. This cabinet card is from J.S. Barnard in Pembrook, Massachusetts. The picture was sent to Wilbur H. Siebert by L.A. Benedict, for use in his research on the Underground Railroad. Siebert (1866-1961) began researching the Underground Railroad in the 1890s as a way to interest his students in history. View on Ohio Memory.
