American toad photographs
Description: Three close-up photographs of the American toad, Latin name Bufo americanus, which is found in moist environments in all of Ohio's 88 counties. It grows to 2.5 to 3 inches in length and a lifespan of approximately five to ten years, although some toads have been found to live up to thirty years. The toad hibernates over winter and then mates in the spring, with females laying up to 15,000 eggs. The eggs hatch into tadpoles, which then go through metamorphosis, a developmental change in physical form. The photographs measure 3" x 3" (7.62 x 7.62 cm). View on Ohio Memory.
