: The subject of this portrait, Homer L. Ruh of Columbus, Ohio, served in the American Expeditionary Force during World War I. He trained at Camp Sheridan, Alabama, where this photograph was taken. Homer was with the 37th Infantry Division in France and Belgium from June 15, 1918, until March 23, 1919. On April 12, 1919, Ruh was honorably discharged. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry by General John J. Pershing. After service in World War I, Ruh was a professional football player with the Columbus Panhandles (later the Columbus Tigers), an early National Football League franchise. View on Ohio Memory.
