Birdstone from Glacial Kame Culture   Save
Clifford M. Williams Collection
Description: Birdstone of dark gray and very pale brown banded slate has a flat base with holes drilled diagonally at the corners. It has an elongated neck ending in a rounded, hook-like head. The tail tapers gradually to a flat end with rounded corners. The head has been broken off and repaired. There is a chip missing from the beak on the left side. Although the function of birdstones is unknown, they might have served as highly-decorative spearthrower (atlatl) weights. Item was found at the Clifford Williams Site in Washington Township, Logan County, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.
