Description: This is a bookplate of Washington Gladden (1836-1918). The middle building in the image represents Williams College at Springfield, Massachusetts; the left-hand sketch shows the Springfield Congregational Church; and the right-hand sketch shows the First Congregational Church of Columbus. The Greek motto means "For I can do all things new." Gladden was an American clergyman who was a pioneer of the Social Gospel and a key spokesman for liberal Protestantism. He was minister of the First Congregational Church in Columbus, Ohio for over 30 years. View on Ohio Memory.
