Description: This photograph is a view of mounds at Mound City. The Mound City Group is a large Hopewell culture ceremonial center found along the Scioto River in Ross County. The Mound City Group consists of 24 burial mounds surrounded by an earthen enclosure. The enclosure is square-shaped with rounded corners. Several mounds of the group were excavated in the 1800s. In the 1920s William C. Mills and Henry C. Shetrone of the Ohio Historical society also excavated several mounds. Mound City is one of the earliest major centers of the Hopewell culture, and in 1923 it was declared a National Monument. View on Ohio Memory.
