Description: This photograph is a distant view of mounds at The Mound City Group. The Mound City Group is a large Hopewell culture ceremonial center found along the Scioto River in Ross County. This is one of the earliest major centers of the Hopewell culture. The Mound City Group consists of 24 burial mounds that are surrounded by an earthen enclosure. The enclosure is square-shaped with rounded corners. Several mounds were excavated in the 1800s. In the 1920s, William C. Mills and Henry C. Shetrone of the Ohio Historical Society excavated several other mounds. In 1923, Mound City was declared a National Monument. View on Ohio Memory.
