Description: Four tracks of railroad cars being loaded at a steel coal tipple built by the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company of Columbus, Ohio. It was used at the Panther Coal Company, Raitt, Virginia, 1934. The coal has been processed through a Jeffrey revolving screen to classify it according to lump size. Three different sizes of coal can be seen in the coal cars in this photograph. Different sizes of coal were used in different facilities, such as power plants, home heating, and steam locomotives.
