Ohio Guide Photographs
Description: Caption reads: "Roller dam at Eureka, 9 miles S. of Gallipolis, during its construction." Formerly called the Gallipolis Locks and Dam, the Robert C. Byrd Locks & Dam, which traverses the Ohio River from West Virginia to Ohio, was dedicated in 1937. The locks and dam were renamed in 1992 after West Virginia Senator Robert C. Bird, the longest serving member of the U.S. Senate. The non-navigable, high-lift, gated dam, contains eight roller gates. Two new parallel locks were constructed between November 1987 and January 1993. Renovation of the dam took place between Aug 1992 and 2002, replacing 8 roller gates, control units, motor control center and electric feeders. View on Ohio Memory.
