: Jacob Lindley was born in 1774 in Pennsylvania. At the age of eighteen he attended Jefferson College, Pennsylvania and later Princeton University, New Jersey, studying theology. In 1803 Lindley moved to Ohio, becoming the pastor of a Presbyterian Church in Waterford. He moved to Athens, Ohio in 1808 after being selected by the first board of trustees of Ohio University to head the university. As the first president of Ohio University he served from 1809-1822. The fireplace mantel pictured in the photograph is from the Lindley House in Athens, Ohio. It is consistent with the Greek revival style that was popular in American architecture during the early 19th century. View on Ohio Memory.
