He was from Massachusetts and served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, Senate and the Board of Education. Later he was elected to the U S Senate. His belief was that unruly children could be turned into disciplined, judicious citizens through education. He became the first president of Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio View on Ohio Memory.
