Description: This house was built in 1828 by John Pray as a trading post and stagecoach stopping post. It has served many purposes over the years, from a jail to a school to a ballroom. In 1927, Henry Ford held his Halloween party in the building, probably because of its reputation for being haunted. In the 1930s, this house was occupied by Toledo antiques dealer Charles Capron. Born April 9, 1738, in Sutton, Massachusetts, Putnam fought for the British in the French and Indian War, later lobbying for land grants to veterans west of the Appalachian Mountains. Putnam served in the Continental Army during the Revolution, fighting in the battle of Saratoga and rising to the rank of brigadier general. Throughout the conflict, Putnam served as an advocate for junior officers and enlisted men. America's first government, created by the Articles of Confederation, had limited powers and faced tremendous difficulty meeting its expenses. This included paying the men in its army. The Confederation Congress promised to give these men land grants in the Ohio Country, but the Congress was slow to act. In 1783, Putnam helped draft the Newburgh Petition. In this document, many of the officers in the Continental Army demanded payment immediately in land grants or they would even contemplate replacing their government. General George Washington was able to prevent an uprising. Putnam established the first Ohio Company settlement on the banks of the Ohio River. Known originally as Adelphia, the community soon became known as Marietta. To protect the settlement from Native American attacks, the settlers built a fortification known as the Campus Martius. After the Treaty of Greeneville was signed in 1795, the threat to Marietta was limited; settlers founded Ohio University there in 1808. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated ca. 1935-1940, this photograph shows a man building a model of a Cape Cod style house. Cape Cod is a style of domestic architecture characterized by a small, single-level home with a large central chimney, a high-pitch roof, and simple or plain exterior decoration. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Patterson, founder of The National Cash Register Company, paid for the move. The Daughters of the American Revolution raised money by public subscription to have it restored, and the Dayton Historical Society was organized to operate it as a museum. In the 1960s, the Montgomery Historical Society donated the tavern and related collections to Carillon Historical Park. Newcom Tavern made its final move in the fall of 1964. George Newcom was a veteran of General Anthony Wayne's campaign against the Indians and led one of three groups of original settlers that headed north from Cincinnati to Dayton in 1796. He and his wife, the former Mary Henderson, chose lot #13 on which to build their new home. In 1800, Mary gave birth to one of the first white children born in Dayton, their daughter Jane. Since the tavern was a large two-story building, it soon became the center of village activity, as well as overnight lodging for travelers. The first court sessions were held in the tavern, and it served as a place for school and church services. During this period George Newcom became a prominent civic leader, serving as Dayton's first innkeeper, and Montgomery County's first sheriff and jailer. He was elected to the Ohio Senate in 1815, succeeded Benjamin Van Cleve in the office of clerk of the court, and became president of Dayton's first bank. The Newcoms sold the tavern in 1815, and ownership changed several times during the next twenty years. In 1838, Joseph Shaffer purchased the structure at a Sheriff's auction and converted it into a general store. The building remained "Shaffer's Store" for the next 56 years. Description: Caption reads "Rising-Peters House, Lancaster, Ohio". This Greek Revival style home was built in 1835 for William Reese for his bride, Mary Elizabeth Sherman, the eldest sister of General William Tecumseh Sherman. It has 13.5 foot ceilings and a free standing spiral staircase. The Reese's left Lancaster in 1837, and during the next thirty years the house saw many different owners. In 1872 the house was bought by Philip and Caroline Rising, which was kept in the family, with their grandson Philip Rising Peters being the last to own it privately. In 1994 the house was donated to the Fairfield County Commissioners, and became the Decorative Arts Center. The house is usually called the Reese-Peters House. View on Ohio Memory.
