Grey attended the University of Pennsylvania for dentistry, only to decide after graduation that he wanted to be a writer. In his lifetime he wrote over ninety books--most were Westerns, but fishing was also a common theme. Some of his works include "Spirit of the Border," "Desert Gold," "The Last Trail," "The Call of the Canyon," and "The Thundering Herd." Born in Chillicothe, Burton Stevenson devoted his life to the written word. He was a prolific author (he wrote more than 50 books), an anthologist, and a librarian. Following stints as a journalist while a student at Princeton University and then at newspapers in Chillicothe, Stevenson became the librarian of that city's public library in 1899. He held the post for 58 years. Stevenson helped secure a Carnegie Library for Chillicothe, completed in 1906, and became prominent for his service during World War I. He founded a library at Camp Sherman (an army training camp north of the city), which became a model for others nationally. Stevenson then went to Paris as the European director of the Library War Service. After the Armistice in 1918, he established the American Library in Paris and directed it until 1920 and again from 1925 - 1930. In addition to accomplishments as a librarian, he wrote or compiled more than 50 books, including "The Mystery of the Boule Cabinet" (1912), the "Home Book of Quotations" (1934), and many works for young people. Description: This is a photographic reproduction of an engraved portrait depicting William Holmes McGuffey. McGuffey, who was from Tuscarawas County, Ohio, was a professor at Miami University from 1826 to 1836. Between 1836 and 1845 he served as president of three Ohio institutions: Cincinnati College, Ohio University and Woodward College in Cincinnati. In 1845 McGuffey became a professor at the University of Virginia, where he taught until his death in 1873. Description: Zane Grey pictured on horseback on the set of the film version of Riders of the Purple Sage, 1918. Grey, born Pearl Zane Grey (January 31, 1872 – October 23, 1939), was an American author born in Zanesville, Ohio. He wrote popular adventure books and stories of the American frontier. After marrying his wife, Lina Elise (Dolly) Grey (1883-1957), the couple settled Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania. In addition to raising their three children, Lina became Grey's manager and supporter, and edited his manuscripts. Grey self-published his first book "Betty Zane" in 1903 only to become the bestselling fiction author in the world during his lifetime, his most respected work being Riders of the Purple Sage, published in 1912. In 1918 the Greys moved to California where the author formed his own motion picture company. Grey was a very prolific writer. During his 37 years of writing career, Grey published close to 70 novels, 12 non-fiction books, 250 short works, and 4 boy's books. Over 100 Western movies were made using his novels as source material, and he is considered to be one of the major literary influences on the film industry in Hollywood. View on Ohio Memory.
