Description: Dated ca. 1935-1940, this photograph shows three students standing near a woodworking tool as one practices using it. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The photograph shows a pulpit in a workshop. The pulpit, which is nearly complete, features a cross in the front-facing panel. Wood shavings and dust cover the ground, and tools sit around the room. Photograph by Harry Evan Kinley (1882-1969), a native of Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Kinley was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's store, and later as a traveling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). Kinley was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas. Description: A small broadside, originally posted by John Lindley of Dayton, Ohio, dated August 1st, 1821. The advertisement reads "Ran away from the subscriber on Sunday last an apprentice to the carpenter business, named Stephen Crane." A physical description of Crane follows, with additional information plus an offer of "reasonable compensation" for any person who delivers Crane back to Lindley. Young Ohioans would often learn a craft or trade by apprenticing with a craftsman from whom they could learn the necessary skills of the job.
