Description: James C. Reynolds was the founder and namesake of the city of Reynoldsburg in central Ohio. Born in 1806, he arrived in the area which would become Reynoldsburg around 1831. After founding the city along the heavily-traveled Cumberland Road (also known as National Road), he served as a Brigadier General in the Ohio Militia and was a representative in the Ohio General Assembly. Description: Postcard image showing a busy downtown street scene. Based on the "The Union" sign for The Union department store on North High and Long Streets, this photograph was taken two or three blocks north of Broad Street on North High. Trolley #296, marked "Oak St.," is visible in the street along with multiple horse-drawn carriages. A number of signs advertising various businesses can be seen on the right: a post office, a gramophone and phonograph store, and a trunk and umbrella shop. The photograph's date is based on the absence of the Atlas Building, which was build in 1905 just east of The Union, and is not visible in this photograph. Description: This photographic postcard is captioned "A Trip to Wapakoneta, O., pub. by M.W. Hamilton." It illustrates five scenes in Wapakoneta: the theatre, the high school, a view down Auglaize Street, the courthouse, and the Auglaize River. A correspondent wrote in German to the Grand Rapids, Michigan, recipient about enjoying a little visit this week in this very little German city, but the card was never stamped or mailed. Wapakoneta later became famous as the home of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Map of Yellow Springs, Ohio, 1855. In 1825, one hundred Owenite families arrived in the area, hoping to create a utopian community based on socialism, where all of the residents owned the property communally and worked together for the common good of all people. With the Owenites' arrival the community grew quickly, although the utopian vision for it never truly developed. Yellow Springs received its name from a nearby spring, whose water left yellow deposits on surrounding rocks due to the high iron content. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This illustration of the city of Akron appears in "Historical Collections of Ohio," published by Henry Howe in 1907. Akron was originally laid out in 1825 and in 1841 became the seat of Summit County. The name came from a Greek word meaning "an elevation" or "point." Originally, the community was located slightly south of its present location, in modern-day South Akron. Many of the town's earliest residents were Irish migrants employed to build the nearby Ohio and Erie Canal. After 1827, when the canal was completed between Akron and Cleveland, the community's business interests really began to prosper. Its location along the canal meant that many farmers brought their crops to Akron to be milled and then transported to other markets, and manufacturing interests such as mills, furnaces, and textiles also emerged. A man stands with his foot on the wheel of the buggy and looks towards the two horses. Mail bags from the train depot fill the back of the buggy. Bicycles lean against the curb in front of the post office, and advertisements on the side of the building next door for a drug store mention "Reliable Remedies- blood purifier, magic linament, cough compound" and Maxwell's carpets.
