There are thirteen red and white strips representing the thirteen original colonies. The shape is rectangular, measuring 112 by 200 cm. The fabric is cotton. Mrs. Juliette Sayre Nichols of New York City donated this item in 1940 in memory of her sister, Mary Anderson Sayre Dana. The flag flew on the Steamer Eugene carrying soldiers during the Civil War. The stars have disintegrated due to exposure to air and light. The dimensions are 150 cm by 270 cm. Demming L. Hannaford of Minneapolis, Minnesota, donated this flag in 1937. The donor's great grandfather, John J. Demming, was a member of the 14th O.V.I. Demming carried the flag during the Civil War and retained possession of it after being mustered out. Description: United States national flag dates from 1862. The hand-woven wool flag has seven red and six white stripes and a blue canton with 35 white stars sewn on, arranged in five rows of seven. A tag attached to the flag reads: "Hand woven, bullet-ridden American flag, containing 35 stars. Carried by 31st Regiment O.V.I. in Battle of Stone River or Murfreesboro, Tennessee December 31, 1862." The flag is made of wool and measures 125 by 190 cm. The Ohio Historical Society purchased this flag from the Abraham Lincoln Book Shop in Chicago, Illinois, in 1948. The seller acquired the flag from the grandson of Colonel William T. Coggeshall, who was the military secretary to Ohio Governor William Dennison during the Civil War. Description: This is a painting of the regimental colors of the 10th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. The blue silk flag served as the regimental colors of the 10th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. The flag was manufactured in the United States between 1861 and 1865. The United States arms is positioned in the center of the flag's front or obverse side. The arms consists of an embroidered, gold-colored bald eagle holding an olive branch in its right talon and a bundle of arrows in its left talon. The eagle holds in its beak a painted, gold-outlined scroll with the motto "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (Latin for "one out of many"). A shield with red and white stripes and a blue upper portion is positioned on the eagle's breast. Thirteen gold-painted stars outlined in red are arranged in two arcs above the arms. A gold-outlined banner below the arms features gold text that reads: "10th OHIO CAVALRY." The reverse side of the flag features gold text at its center that reads: "TUNNEL HILL / RESACCA / ATLANTA, MACON / WAYNESBORO / SAVANNAH." The text is framed by brown and green laurel. A gold star appears in each of the flag's four corners. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. In the 1960s, the collection was photographed and commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of many Civil War flags. Below the arms is a red painted banner with a gold border. Gold text in the banner reads: "4TH REG'T OHIO VOLUNTEER CAVALRY." The flag has gold fringe on its top, right, and bottom sides. The dimensions are 66 by 76 cm and the fabric is silk. Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags.
