By the 1870s Dewey began compiling portfolios and custom plate books and portfolios for customers. He employed a staff of artists and other workers to create the images. Description: Engraving of the Cincinnati Exposition Hall in the 1870's. The building is also known as Saengerfest Hall or Music Hall. The Venetian Gothic music hall was built by Hannaford,Samuel, & Sons. The land was originally purchased in 1818 for $3,200 at the West Side of Elm Street and North of 12th Street (14th street). In 1821 the building was used as Ohio's first insane asylum, later the area was used as an orphan asylum beginning in 1832. Later, during a cholera outbreak the building was used to house diseased people and the surrounding area was used as a cemetery to bury the deceased. Beginning in 1859 the surrounding area was called Elm Street Park and it remained a place for recreation until 1870 when the hall was used as an exposition hall. During the years 1870-1876 when the hall was used for industrial expositions the building was able to accommodate up to 8 acres of industrial and horticulture displays. Exposition Hall was a huge wooden structure that was 250 feet long, 100 feet wide, and 80 feet tall. In 1876 the hall was converted to a music hall with no stage. It was not until 1890 when the hall installed a proscenium theater stage so that performers had a proper environment for their acts. The hall is currently still used for musical performances and it is renowned around the world for its architectural design and strangely known for its supposed paranormal activity. Description: "Choicest Varieties of Celery" is the headline next to a drawing of Kalamazoo celery, a new variety promoted on p. 11 of the trade catalog "Beautiful Flowers from the Calla Greenhouses, Calla, Ohio" (1899). The illustration shows a bunch of celery with the letters of the name "Kalamazoo" arranged in a vertical column. The catalog was published by Lewis Templin and Sons Seed Company (Calla, Ohio), which was among the largest mail-order seed houses in the United States during the mid- to late 1800s. Pennsylvania native Lewis Templin moved to Ohio in 1822 and started his nursery in 1845 in Canfield. In 1866 Templin and four sons built a greenhouse at Loveland Station (later renamed "Calla"). The business had a well-deserved reputation for quality products and for generating its financial success solely from small, individual orders. Templin's son Mark produced the firm's catalogs, including "Beautiful Flowers from the Calla Greenhouses." An estimated 300,000 catalogs were distributed annually. A fire destroyed the company's entire spring crop in January 1892, but afterwards the firm rebuilt on an even larger scale. Lewis Templin died in 1899. His sons continued operating the business until 1907, when increased competition and rising costs caused it to fail. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: "Map of the City of Rochester, 1859," from "Rochester: The Flower City, 1855-1890" by Blake McKelvey (Cambridge, Mass.: Harvard University Press, 1949) This drawing faces p. 12. Historian Blake McKelvey's professional career is inextricably linked to his adopted hometown, Rochester, New York. The majority of his books are devoted to the city's history, including the publication in which this map is found. During the last half of the 19th century, Rochester was home to a thriving nursery industry, and the metropolis soon became known as "Flower City." The map's complete title is "Map of the City of Rochester, 1859, from Cornells' Maps. Published by Curtiss, Butts & Co., Rochester." Silas Cornell (1788 or 9-1864) was a noted cartographer, surveyor, and schoolmaster who moved to Rochester, New York, in 1836. The accuracy of his 1839 map of Rochester, New York, made it the base plat and reference point for future surveys and maps of that city. Cornell also was a devout Quaker and dedicated abolitionist. D. at the Ohio State University and working for the Fish and Wildlife Service of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Chapman (1911-1984) was inducted into the Army Air Corps in November of 1942. He was stationed at various posts around the United States during World War II, as well as overseas in India and China. Following his military service, Chapman continued his career as a naturalist and field ecologist for the Ohio State Division of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Ohio Division of Wildlife.
