Description: This sample ballot was issued by Daniel J. Ryan, Ohio Secretary of State, before the election of November 3, 1891, intended to illustrate to Ohioans "the form of a state ballot under the new election law of Ohio." An explanation is given for voting a "straight ticket" (voting for all of the candidates put forth by one political party without having to mark each one on the ballot), as well as for individual candidates or propositions. The general voting process is outlined as well. Political parties represented in this election were the Republican, Democratic, Prohibition, and People's parties. An emblem decorates the top of each column; an eagle with arrows in its talons (Republican Party), a rooster (Democratic Party), a rose (Prohibition Party) and a plow (People's Party). William McKinley was the Republican candidate for governor, and would be elected over the incumbent James Campbell by a margin of over 20,000 votes. View on Ohio Memory.

He operated a legal practice, helped establish numerous railroad ventures, and served in the Ohio Senate and House of Representatives as well as the US House of Representatives. Description: Know-Nothing Party ticket naming party candidates for state and county offices. At the bottom of the page are voting instructions. The Know-Nothing Party, also known as the American Party, was a prominent United States political party during the late 1840s and the early 1850s whose members strongly opposed immigrants and followers of the Catholic Church. Critics of this party named it the Know-Nothing Party because its members would not reveal the party's doctrines to non-members. Know-Nothings were to respond to questions about their beliefs with, "I know nothing." Know-Nothings wielded some power in Ohio, and several cities, including Youngstown and Cleveland, had newspapers that touted Know-Nothing beliefs. Ohio's Know-Nothings formed an alliance in the early 1850s with the Fusionist Party, a precursor of the Republican Party, but as a result of the party's refusal to take a position on slavery, the Know-Nothing Party declined by the presidential election of 1860. The party did not run a candidate for president in this election, as many of its followers had joined the Republican Party. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Broadside satirizing the "Copperheads" (Peace Democrats) by listing the activities to occur at a fictitious July 4th celebration sponsored by the group at Marietta, Ohio, in 1863. Copperheads or Peace Democrats were people who opposed the Union's attempts to reunite the nation during the American Civil War. During the American Civil War, a majority of Ohioans supported the war effort and the Republican Party, although there was a sizable minority who opposed the conflict. Many of the opponents of the war were members of the "Peace" section of the Democratic Party. They and other opponents of the war often came to be called "Copperheads." View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photographic portrait of Samuel Medary, ca. 1860, in formal attire. Medary was an Ohio Senator and publisher of the Ohio Statesman (1832-1857), which he used to endorse the Democratic Party's candidates and to build support for its policies. Medary bought the "Ohio Monitor," changed its name to the "Ohio Statesman," and later established "The Crisis." Samuel Medary was born on February 25, 1801, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. He relocated to Ohio in 1825. He died in Columbus, Ohio, on November 7, 1864, and is buried in Greenlawn Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.
