Description: Know-Nothing Party ticket naming party candidates for state and county offices. At the bottom of the page are voting instructions. The Know-Nothing Party, also known as the American Party, was a prominent United States political party during the late 1840s and the early 1850s whose members strongly opposed immigrants and followers of the Catholic Church. Critics of this party named it the Know-Nothing Party because its members would not reveal the party's doctrines to non-members. Know-Nothings were to respond to questions about their beliefs with, "I know nothing." Know-Nothings wielded some power in Ohio, and several cities, including Youngstown and Cleveland, had newspapers that touted Know-Nothing beliefs. Ohio's Know-Nothings formed an alliance in the early 1850s with the Fusionist Party, a precursor of the Republican Party, but as a result of the party's refusal to take a position on slavery, the Know-Nothing Party declined by the presidential election of 1860. Description: Charles G. Dawes had an active career in law and the Republican party between 1896 and 1932. He was born in Marietta, Ohio, on August 27, 1865. He was a graduate of Marietta College and the Cincinnati Law School. He was the Vice President to Calvin Coolidge from March 4, 1925 to March 4, 1929. He died in Evanston, Illinois on April 23, 1951. Description: Theodore Burton was born in Jefferson, Ohio, in 1851. He went on to have an active career in politics as a member of the Republican Party. He served as a US senator from 1909 to 1915; and in the House of Representatives from 1921 until the end of 1928. When he died in 1929, he was serving in the US Senate as the appointed replacement for Frank B. Willis. Burton was born in Jefferson, Ashtabula County, Ohio on December 20, 1851. Description: Charles Foster (1828-1904) was governor of Ohio from 1880 to 1884. Foster chose to run as the Republican candidate for Ohio governor in 1879, and campaigned on the issue of sound money, which would require the government to back paper money with gold. Foster won the election and focused his administration on reforming the state government so that it was more efficient. In addition, Foster supported the temperance movement by favoring higher liquor taxes. Ultimately, his support of this tax, known as the Pond Law, contributed to his defeat in the election of 1883. He later went on to serve as Secretary of the Treasury under President Benjamin Harrison from 1891 through 1893. View on Ohio Memory.

By 1885, the Glee Club supported state and local races too, and in 1895 permanently changed the club's name to the Republican Glee Club.
