Description: This photograph shows two unidentified women outside the Ohio Statehouse on the day of James A. Rhodes' inauguration to a fourth term as governor, January 8, 1979. Rhodes was born on September 13, 1909, in Coalton, Ohio. He began his political career by winning election to the school board of Columbus, Ohio, in 1937, then serving as Columbus city auditor. In 1943, he was elected mayor of Columbus, an office he held from 1944 until 1952. Rhodes served as Ohio Auditor from 1952 until 1962, when he won election to his first term as Ohio governor. During his four terms as governor (1962-1970 and 1974-1982), Rhodes oversaw the building of airports, state office buildings, prisons, community colleges, museums and other public structures. He is also notable as the governor who ordered Ohio National Guard troops to Kent State University during a series of student protests against the Vietnam War. On May 4, 1970, the guardsmen fired into a crowd of protestors, killing four and injuring nine. Rhodes retired from politics following an unsuccessful run for a fifth term in 1986, and died March 4, 2001. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph showing the Ohio Statehouse, at the corner of Broad and High Streets, in 1879. The capitol building was built between 1839 and 1861 in the Greek Revival style, resembling the Parthenon in Greece. One of the best examples of Greek Revival civic architecture in the United States, it is also one of the oldest working statehouses in the nation. It is a masonry building, consisting largely of brick and Columbus limestone quarried from the west banks of the Scioto River. This image comes from a collection assembled in March 1929 by the F. & R. Lazarus Company to mark its 78th anniversary. The photographs and materials assembled in a scrapbook represented the origins and growth of Columbus since 1803. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of renovation taking place at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, Ohio, 1922. Equipment can be seen that was used to discard the waste into the trucks. The work was done by employees of the C. W. Bryant Company Building Movers and Riggers. Charles William Bryant Jr. was born in Dayton in 1882, and from his start as a farmhand with a 3rd grade education would go on to become a prominent African American businessman, self-taught engineer, and owner of one of Columbus’ largest construction firms. The C. W. Bryant Rigging & Moving Co. was involved in major projects throughout Columbus, including the construction of a temporary Broad Street bridge following the 1913 flood, the removal of lighting arcs from High Street, and dismantling Hanford Village in 1962 for the construction of I-71. Bryant faced racial discrimination in his personal and professional life, including the refusal of local steelworkers’ unions to admit Bryant’s black employees, which forced Bryant Co. out of steel construction in the 1950s. He nonetheless expanded into other areas, including ownership of Bryco gas stations, a coal and oil company, the Litchford and Macon hotels, and the Ohio Malt Beverage Co.-the first African American distributor in Columbus. Description: Ohio battle flags were on display at the Ohio Statehouse until the 1960s, when the state formed a committee to oversee the efforts to restore the fragile flags. Some of the battle flags were on display on the Plaza Level of the Ohio Historical Society from 1970 until 1989. For conservation reasons, the flags have been in storage since 1989. In the 1960s, the collection was photographed and commercial artist Robert Needham painted illustrations of many Civil War flags. Photographs of the flags and the paintings are now part of the society's archival collections. Top: This Stars and Stripes guidon was taken into battle by an unknown Battery of the 1st O.V.L.A. Its blue canton bears 34 stars in rows of 7-7-6-7-7. Bottom: Below crossed cannons, red text on a gold field reads: LADY CLEVLAND. A horizontal line runs through the middle of the flag separating them. This flag was manufactured in the United States between 1861 and 1865. The regiment was called upon April 21, 1861 in a letter to Colonel James Barnett from the Governor, William Dennison. Each Battery of the 1st has its own history and operated independently in battle. Description: This photograph shows the interior of the Ohio House of Representatives, Ohio Statehouse, during the mid-20th century. The Statehouse Complex includes the Statehouse, Senate Building, and the Capitol Atrium, which connects the two buildings. Construction began in 1839 to replace an earlier two-story brick structure after several complaints about the lack of space to accommodate the rapidly growing town and state. Initial plans estimated that construction of the structure would take two years and cost $200,000 proved to be wrong. The building was completed 22 years later (in 1861) at a price of $2.2 million. The Statehouse is a National Historic Landmark and is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of Greek Revival Architecture in the United States. The Senate building was completed in 1901 and was built in the Neoclassical Revival style. Salmon P. Chase was the first governor to occupy the new Statehouse. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: On the left is a Wool bunting Stars and Stripes bearing 34 stars in rows of 7-7-6-7-7. On the right is a gold silk guidon taken to battle by the 1st Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery. A horizontal line divides flag. Above the live are two crossed cannons and below it is the text: "LADY FLINT". These flags were not cataloged. The 117th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was mustered on September 15, 1862. The regiment was later reorganized as the 1st Ohio Volunteer Heavy Artillery on May 2, 1863. Companies from the regiment performed service in Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina before mustering out in Knoxville, Tennessee, on July 25, 1865. Edged in gold fringe and in what was once gold lettering it reads: 1st REG'T Ohio. The regiment was called upon April 21, 1861 in a letter to Colonel James Barnett from the Governor, William Dennison. Each Battery of the 1st has its own history and operated independently in battle. Their initial appointment was for three months, though most served an additional campaign for three to five years. A flank marker is a small flag carried at each end of the regiment line. The photograph belongs to the Columbus Citizen-Journal Photograph Collection. On November 9, 1959, the Columbus Citizen and the Ohio State Journal merged to form the Columbus Citizen-Journal, a morning paper. With this merger, the Ohio State Journal, which began in 1811 as the Western Intelligencer, suspended publication. The collection consists of 24,006 black-and-white photographs of various sizes and dates ranging from 1912 to 1984, which were either used in the paper itself or for research purposes in the interest of composing a piece. Major engagements in which the battery took part include Mill Springs, Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea.
