Description: United States flag is made of wool and has 34 white stars on a blue canton along with seven red and six white stripes. In June 1863 the 110th and 122nd OVI under the command of Colonel Joseph Warren Keifer were encamped around a fort on the heights west of Winchester, Virginia. Outnumbered by the Confederates who were marching toward Pennsylvania, the Union regiments retreated the night of June 15, leaving the flag flying to fool the Confederates. The next day the Confederates captured the fort and boxed the flag to send to Richmond as a trophy. Before the flag left Winchester, a Union sympathizer, Annie Jackson, took the flag and hid it. She gave it to Joseph Warren Keifer January 7, 1922. Joseph Warren Keifer (1836-1932) served as a Union general during the Civil War in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He later served in Congress and as Speaker of the House during the 47th Congress. Joseph Warren Keifer of Springfield, Ohio, donated this flag in 1922. The donor received the flag from Annie Jackson on January 7, 1922. View on Ohio Memory.

Stanton's effective management helped organize the massive military resources of the North and guide the Union to victory. Stanton was born in Steubenville, Ohio, and attended Kenyon College. Description: The image portrays Nathaniel Gwynne saving his unit's colors on July 30, 1864, during the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia (Civil War). For his bravery Gwynne received the Congressional Medal of Honor on January 27, 1865. He served as a private in Company H, 13th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. His citation reads: "When about entering upon the charge, this soldier, then but 15 years old, was cautioned not to go in, as he had not been mustered. He indignantly protected and participated in the charge, his left arm being crushed by a shell and amputated soon afterward." Description: Carte de visite of General Winfield Scott, who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. Originally from Petersburg, Virginia, he refused to resign from his position when his home state seceded. Placed in command of the Union Army, he held himself responsible for the loss at Bull Run. By the start of the war, he was old and too overweight to ride a horse. Command was given to McClellan shortly after. While he did not serve much during the Civil War, his career was long and distinguished, having spent nearly 50 years in the US military. Scott served with great distinction in the War of 1812 and the Mexican War, and is considered one of the best, if not the best, general to ever serve the United States. View on Ohio Memory.

Warren, a native of Cold Spring, New York, is also known as the "Hero of Little Round Top." At Gettysburg, he realized the importance of the hill, and on his own initiative ordered Vincent's brigade, including the famous 20th Maine, to occupy it. The troops reached the summit of the hill minutes before the Confederates swept over it, and prevented the Union's left from being turned. Description: Carte de visite of General Ambrose Everett Burnside, who served in the Union Army during the Civil War. A very well-liked general, he was nevertheless roundly criticized for his handling of troops in battle. He is particularly known for his sloth in assaulting what is now known as Burnside's Bridge at Antietam, which may have resulted in a stalemate rather than a potential Union victory.
