Anthony Wayne Spurs  Save
Description: Anthony Wayne owned this pair of wrought iron spurs. They are each 6 inches (15.24 cm) long and 4 inches (10.16 cm) wide. Spurs are objects with blunt or pointed edges that fit on the heel of a person's boot or shoe. When that person is mounted on a horse, he or she can urge the horse forward by poking the horse with the spur. Anthony Wayne (1745-1796) was born in Pennsylvania and gained distinction during the American Revolution. He was nicknamed "Mad" Anthony Wayne due to his sense of daring and impatience with restraint. After the war, Americans Indians dealt the military in the Northwest Territory humiliating defeats. Undisciplined militia troops were blamed, and George Washington appointed Wayne commander-in-chief of the newly created Legion of the United States. Under Wayne's command, troops were ruthlessly drilled and disciplined. After building several forts, Wayne's army defeated the Americans Indians at the pivotal Battle of Fallen Timbers. Ohio Statehouse Interior photographs  Save
Description: Two photographs of the interior of the Ohio statehouse after the 1957 renovations document the staircase to the House of Representatives' chamber and a hallway where legislators' offices are located. The photographs measure 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.4 cm). The Ohio statehouse was built between 1839 and 1861 in the Greek Revival style, resembling the Parthenon in Greece. One of the best examples of Greek Revival civic architecture in the United States, it is also one of the oldest working statehouses in the nation. It is a masonry building, consisting largely of brick and Columbus limestone quarried from the west banks of the Scioto River. Seven architects worked on the project. The most notable is Nathan B. Kelly, who modified the building's plans to include heating and ventilation systems. Prisoners at the Ohio Penitentiary were used to complete portions of the construction of the building.
