Hubbard Avenue School bookplate  Save
Description: Bookplate designed for Hubbard Avenue School (Columbus, Ohio) by Josephine Klippart (1848-1936). The rectangular form features a border of lilies and an image of a woman reading a book. On a scroll at the top is the name "Hubbard Avenue School." The inscription reads: "Use the book but let no one misuse it; the bee does not stain the lilies but only touches them." Designed by David Reibel, an important Columbus architect, Hubbard Avenue School was completed in 1896 and is located at 104 West Hubbard Avenue on the near north side of Columbus. Klippart (1848-1936) was the daughter of John Hancock Klippart and his wife, Emeline. Born in Osnaburg, Ohio, she grew up in Columbus and began to paint as a young girl. A specialist in the scientific illustration of Ohio's fishes and birds, Klippart assisted Virginia Jones with the coloring of the nests for "Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio" after Genevieve Jones died.
