Description: Dated 1937, this photograph shows an ally in a Cincinnati neighborhood in Hamilton County, Ohio. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Howard Zimmer, Sr., posing with his company truck. Zimmer began a home-building business in Columbus, Ohio, in 1940. Company growth was stalled during World War II, but Zimmer was able to capitalize on the residential building boom after the War. Description: This photograph shows 5th and Vine Streets in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dow's Drugstore is on the right, owned by Cora Dow Goode, who took over her father's (Edwin B. Dow) business. She was only the second woman to graduate from the Cincinnati College of Pharmacy and opened several drug stores in the Cincinnati area, and eventually established the Dow Drug Company. Description: Reverse reads: "This is the first National Cash Register opened, this register used roll paper. It was first used in the Miners' Supply Co. in Coalton, Ohio." This is a photograph of the first National Cash register ever used at the Miners' Supply Co. in Coalton, Ohio. It is shown here opened. The National Cash Register Company was founded by John H. Patterson in Dayton, Ohio. Patterson (1844-1922), hoping the machines could save him money by reducing accounting errors in his supply business, purchased the patent rights to the cash register from James Ritty in 1884. Within six months, he reduced his debt and showed a profit. Patterson built the first National Cash Register factory on his family's farm in Dayton in 1888. By the turn of the century, the company had become one of the largest employers in Dayton. Known for his strict training program for salespeople and health and education programs for employees, Patterson was closely involved in the daily lives of many of his workers. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph depicts pit car loaders under construction at the Jeffrey Manufacturing Company in Columbus, Ohio. Loaders eliminated the time-consuming job of loading coal into pit cars by hand, which increased production and lowered cost. These 38D loaders were later shipped to the Peabody Coal Company. The Jeffrey Manufacturing Company, also known as the Jeffrey Mining Corporate Center, was established in 1876 as the Lechner Mining Machine Company in Columbus, Ohio, by Joseph Jeffrey and Francis Lechner. Description: Photograph of Simon Lazarus (1808-1887) of The F. & R. Lazarus Company, ca. 1870. Simon Lazarus arrived in Columbus, Ohio, in 1870 and opened the Lazarus store. He died in 1877 and after his wife Amelia's death in 1899, the name was changed to The F & R Lazarus store after his sons, Fred and Ralph. In 2003, after a successful century and a half, the Lazarus Company was incorporated with Macy's, a member of the Federated Department stores. View on Ohio Memory.
