Description: This image shows the Fort Steuben Bridge near Steubenville, Ohio. The bridge was demolished on February 12, 2012. The demolition of the bridge was not a universally accepted idea. Bicyclists and trail enthusiasts began a campaign back in 2007 to save the bridge in order for it to be the Ohio River crossing for a bike trail that will ultimately run from Washington, D.C. to Indianapolis. The bike trail concept ran into opposition because the Ohio portal access is to Ohio 7, a divided expressway. In 1786, the United States government built Fort Steuben within the area known as the Seven Ranges, in what is now southeastern Ohio. The federal government had arranged for a survey of this area in order to prepare for the settlement of the Northwest Territory. Fort Steuben served two purposes: troops stationed at the fort were supposed to keep illegal settlers from moving into Ohio, and the surveyors of the Seven Ranges used the fort as a base of operations. The fort, which was destroyed in a fire in 1790, did not deter people from moving into the Seven Ranges. After the fort was abandoned, these settlers established a town, which became known as Steubenville. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This is a photograph of a steel barge in the locks at Steubenville, Ohio at Dam # 10.L Lock and Dam 10, completed in 1915, was part of a slack-water navigation system built for the Ohio River. The site included a brick powerhouse and two lockkeeper houses. The lock and dam was replaced when Pike Island Dam was completed in 1965. The buildings were demolished in 1975. Remnants include two sets of steps, a 600-foot ramp, the lock esplanade and wall, and a recess at the east end where the lock gate once retracted. The first part of this system was the Davis Island Dam near Pittsburgh, completed in 1885. By 1929, a nine-foot pool had been completed along the entire length of the Ohio, culminating with Lock and Dam 53 at Grand Chain, Illinois. Built by the Pittsburgh District of the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, this system resulted in a more navigable Ohio River with increased depth and diminished current. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: In January and February of 1937, weeks of heavy rainfall caused the Ohio River to flood parts of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Kentucky, causing $500 million in property damages, and displacing and killing hundreds. By the end of January, the Ohio River measured 80 feet deep in Cincinnati, one of the areas most affected. This photograph is taken from the private bridge of the Wheeling Steel Corp. in Steubenville, Ohio, looking north. At the center are slag piles, and Fort Steuben Bridge is in the distance. President Franklin D. Roosevelt dispatched thousands of relief workers from the Works Progress Administration to rescue flood victims and restore affected cities. In 1935, President Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. Description: This is a photograph of the base of the tower in the Jefferson County Courthouse. It is located at 301 Market Street in Steubenville, Ohio. Construction on the building was started in 1871 and completed in 1874 by architects Heard and Blythe. In 1950, the roof collapsed due to a ferocious snow storm. The top floor collapsed as well, destroying the ornate roof and tower. Instead of replacing the original mansard roof, the county officials decided to have a flat roof on a five story building. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. This photograph shows five men, veterans of the Civil War, standing in front of the Edwin Stanton statue which stands on the steps of the Jefferson County Courthouse in Steubenville, Ohio. All the men wear a badge and ribbon. A photographer's mark on the front of the photo reads: "Ideal Photo" Four of the men wear a ribbon which reads "In Memoriam. E. M. Stanton, G. A. R. (Grand Army of the Republic) Steubenville, Ohio." The man second from the left has only one arm. The man second from the right is wearing an electric hearing device, which were invented in the early 1900s) and his ribbon clearly reads "Henry Hale" (fought in the Civil War Company G, 43rd Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Died May 19, 1862) The engraved plaque on the front of the statue reads: "Edwin McMasters Stanton. Born in this city December 19, 1814. U.S. Attorney General 1860 1861. Secretary of War 1862 1868. U.S. Supreme Court 1869. Died December 24, 1869. Erected 1911." The Edwin M. Stanton Monument stands in front of the Jefferson County Courthouse, at 301 Market Street.
