Description: Two photographs of the 1969 Ohio State Fair document activities in Natural Resources Park. The first photograph shows a lumberjack show, while the second is a group of fair-goers canoeing. The slides measure 2" x 2" (5.08 x 5.08 cm). The Ohio State Fair provides an important opportunity for farmers to promote their crops and livestock and to learn about advances in agricultural machinery. The first state fair was held in Cincinnati in 1850. In the ten years that followed, Newark, Sandusky, Zanesville and Cleveland hosted the fair, before it settled permanently in Columbus. Description: Dated ca. 1935-1940, this photograph shows beef cattle grazing in a pasture in Urbana, Ohio, in Champaign County. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

In 1904, the company reorganized and became the Dayton Motor Car Company and made the Stoddard-Dayton automobile. In 1910, the car company was sold to United States Motor Company. Description: This image shows the Lower Pee Pee Lock in Waverly, Pike County, Ohio. The Ohio-Erie Canal, the most important development in the county's early years, was started July 4, 1825, near Newark. The canal passed through Waverly along US 23 and portions of it can still be seen in Waverly today. Only four feet deep and bordered by tow paths with eight feet clearance, the 309 mile canal was completed in 1833 at a cost of more than $7 million. View on Ohio Memory.
