Description: A covered bridge in Clifton, Ohio. Originally Clifton was primarily populated by men who had served in the Revolutionary War and were offered parcels of land for their service. It was not all former soldiers who would settle in Clifton, as the land was good and it was not out of reach in terms of money. Originally, what is today Clifton had an entirely different name. A Revolutionary War veteran named Owen Davis originally gave the town its name of Davis Mills after he helped to start up the town along with his son-in-law. Eventually much of the town's business came under the control of Robert Patterson; the name of Clifton would come from Patterson after he renamed it "Cliff Town." View on Ohio Memory.

This photograph shows three unidentified men loading a metallic casket lid into a double action press machine called "Bliss" at the Springfield Metallic Casket Company in Springfield, Ohio. The Springfield Metallic Casket Company, was located on the northeast corner of Main and Mechanic (now Lowry) streets in Springfield, Ohio. The company was founded in 1884 by A. A. Baker, D. R. Hosterman, Ross Mitchell, Scipio E. Baker, and Edgar N. Lupfer. The company grew to become one of the nation's largest manufacturers of metal caskets and burial vaults. By 1959 it had 230 employees. In the early 1960s, the company became a division of Springfield Greene Industries, Inc., which also owned Springfield's Thermometer Corporation of America. Later, it became a subsidiary of A-T-O Corporation of Willoughby, Ohio. The casket company finally had to close its doors on November 30, 1974 after almost 100 years of continuous production. It was one of the largest producers of burial vaults and metal caskets in the country, and some rumors claim that caskets were built there for Al Capone, President John F. Kennedy, and Buffalo Bill Cody. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows a monument for General George Rogers Clark located at 930 Tecumseh Road in Springfield, Ohio, made by Charles Keck and placed at the site of the Battle of Piqua. The Battle of Peckuwe was the largest battle of the American Revolution west of the Allegheny Mountains. It stands among the 250 acres that is George Rogers Clark Historical Park. The monument reads: "Here General George Rogers Clark with his Kentucky soldiers defeated and drove from this region the Shawnee Indians August 8, 1780 thus aiding to make the Northwest Territory part of the United States. Erected by the Clark County Historical Society with the aid of the State of Ohio 1924." George Rogers Clark (November 19, 1752 – February 13, 1818) was a soldier from Virginia and the highest ranking American military officer on the northwestern frontier during the American Revolutionary War. He served as leader of the Kentucky militia throughout much of the war. Clark is best known for his celebrated captures of Kaskaskia (1778) and Vincennes (1779), which greatly weakened British influence in the Northwest Territory. Because the British ceded the entire Northwest Territory to the United States in the 1783 Treaty of Paris, Clark has often been hailed as the "Conqueror of the Old Northwest." Clark County and Clark State Community College, in Ohio, were both named him. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of Joseph Warren Keifer (1836-1932) an Army officer and politician from Clark County, Ohio, 1881-1883. After enlisting in the Union Army in April 1861, Keifer was commissioned major of the 3rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel and then Colonel of the 110th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. By the end of the war Keifer held the rank of Major General. After the Civil War Keifer went into politics, serving in the Ohio State Senate in 1868 and 1869. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1876 and served three terms, including holding the position of Speaker of the House from 1881-1883. Keifer returned to the Army, serving as a Major General during the Spanish-American War. After the war, he was elected to three more terms in Congress from 1905-1911. View on Ohio Memory.
