The color illustration reveals the stone floor and arcades, three of which were taken from a medieval cloister. The Cloisters were part of a 1933 expansion of the original Neoclassical (Classical Revival) museum building, which had been designed by Edward B. Green and Harry W. Wachter and which opened in 1912. An earlier expansion, in 1926, added the Gothic Hall, where tapestries, sculpture, and stained glass. Although the caption on this postcard image identifies the location as the Gothic Hall and Cloisters Gallery, the image likely shows only the Cloisters area. The Gothic Hall incorporated vaulted ribs, which are not visible in this image. In 1982 the Gothic Hall and Gallery were renovated to create space for a museum entrance on Grove Street, a grand staircase, and the Canaday Gallery. The fiber sculpture is the work of artist Gail Larned. The Columbus Free Press began as a bi-weekly publication in Columbus, Ohio, in 1970. An underground newspaper, it replaced the Ohio State University publication The People, Yes. The earliest known issue of the newspaper appeared on January 4, 1971. The newspaper underwent a series of name changes over the decades, with titles including the Columbus Free Press & Cowtown Times (1972-1976), the Columbus Freepress (1976-1992) and The Free Press (1992-1995). The paper, which covered many liberal and progressive causes, was an alternative to mainstream news sources in central Ohio with the slogan “The Other Side of the News.” In 1995, the paper ceased publication briefly before reemerging as a website in early 1996, and returning as a print publication under the Free Press title in the form of a quarterly journal in 1998. Published under various frequencies during the first part of the 21st century, the Free Press again became a nonprofit monthly publication in 2017 with both a print and web presence, published by the Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism and operated by a volunteer staff and board. Description: This 5" by 7" (12.7 by 17.8 cm) photograph depicts the F5D Skylancer that Neil Armstrong flew in the 1960s. It is permanently exhibited in Wapakoneta near the Neil Armstrong Air & Space Museum, the building was named in honor of Armstrong, first man to set foot on the moon. Neil A. Armstrong was born in Wapakoneta, Ohio on August 5, 1930. He received Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University. After serving as a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952, Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1955. For the next 17 years he worked for NACA and its successor agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). As a research pilot at NASA's Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, he was a project pilot on many pioneering high speed aircraft. Armstrong transferred to astronaut status in 1962 and was assigned as command pilot for the Gemini 8 mission, which was launched on March 16, 1966. As spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission, Armstrong gained the distinction of being the first man to land a craft on the moon and first to step on its surface. Description: This 40-page scrapbook compiled by the Timken Company documents the opening of the Pro Football Hall of Fame on September 7-8, 1963. The scrapbook was presented to Senator Frank Lausche, who was also a former governor of Ohio. The Pro Football Hall of Fame expanded in 1971, nearly doubling in size. By the end of the twentieth century the museum grew two more times and drew crowds of 200,000 people annually. The scrapbook measures 8.5" x 11" (21.59 x 27.94 cm). View on Ohio Memory.
