Description: This is a picture of the Atwood House in Chillicothe, Ohio, a Greek Revival house that was built in 1843 by Jacob Atwood from Baltimore, Maryland. The bricks at the front of the house were brought in from Atwood's foundry in Baltimore, with the rest of the bricks produced in a foundry in the basement. The house has only been owned by three families in it's history and is currently used as a bed and breakfast on the corner of South Paint Street and 4th Street. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Libbey was the founder of the Libbey Glass Company and the Libbey-Owens Sheet Glass Company, both located in Toledo. Since 1912 the museum campus has grown substantially. It now comprises 36 acres with six buildings. Due to the benevolences of its founders and membership support, the museum remains a privately endowed, nonprofit institution. Description: This picture postcard shows an interior view of the Cloisters, the Toledo Museum of Art, Toledo, Ohio. The color illustration reveals the stone floor and arcades, three of which were taken from a medieval cloister. The Cloisters were part of a 1933 expansion of the original Neoclassical (Classical Revival) museum building, which had been designed by Edward B. Green and Harry W. Wachter and which opened in 1912. An earlier expansion, in 1926, added the Gothic Hall, where tapestries, sculpture, and stained glass. Although the caption on this postcard image identifies the location as the Gothic Hall and Cloisters Gallery, the image likely shows only the Cloisters area. The Gothic Hall incorporated vaulted ribs, which are not visible in this image. In 1982 the Gothic Hall and Gallery were renovated to create space for a museum entrance on Grove Street, a grand staircase, and the Canaday Gallery. Description: Caption reads "Rising-Peters House, Lancaster, Ohio". This Greek Revival style home was built in 1835 for William Reese for his bride, Mary Elizabeth Sherman, the eldest sister of General William Tecumseh Sherman. It has 13.5 foot ceilings and a free standing spiral staircase. The Reese's left Lancaster in 1837, and during the next thirty years the house saw many different owners. In 1872 the house was bought by Philip and Caroline Rising, which was kept in the family, with their grandson Philip Rising Peters being the last to own it privately. In 1994 the house was donated to the Fairfield County Commissioners, and became the Decorative Arts Center. The house is usually called the Reese-Peters House. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This image of the Avery-Downer House in Granville, Ohio, was among the photographs produced by the Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) between 1935 and 1943. The house was built in 1842 in the Greek Revival architectural style for Alfred Avery from designs by Minard Lafever. It subsequently served as a home for the Spelman (1845-1873), Downer, and Cole families (1873-1902); and the Phi Gamma Delta (1902-1930) and Kappa Sigma (1930-1956) fraternities. Historian and antiquarian Robbins Hunter, Jr., who occupied the house from 1956 to 1979, bequeathed the house to the Licking County Historical Society. This photograph was among those produced by the Federal Works Progress Administration (WPA) between 1935 and 1943. Mrs. Thomas Kinsman, heir of Frederick Kinsman, deeded the Greek Revival-style house to Hiram College, which formerly used it as a classroom building for the Dana School of Music.
