Description: Harrison County was formed in 1813, from Jefferson County and Tuscarawas County. It is named for William Henry Harrison a hero of the War of 1812, and the first president of the United States from Ohio. The courthouse is located on South Main and West Market Streets in Cadiz, Ohio. The courthouse was designed by Joseph Yost, who designed other courthouses in the area. The architectural style is Second Empire. It was built from 1893 to 1895, with high arched windows, mansard-roofed towers, and a central clock tower. The tower is domed and topped with a statue of Justice. A balcony covers the entrances. This building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on July 18, 1974. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This image shows a road leading into the town of Hopedale. Hopedale is mostly known for it's connection with the Underground Railroad and Clark Gable, who lived in Hopedale for a number of years during his youth. The town was founded by Cyrus McNeely in 1849 where he opened a school. It was in existence from 1849 to 1902. One of it's graduates was George Armstrong Custer, who graduated in 1856. H spent much of his young life in Monroe, Michigan at the home of his half-sister. In 1858, he was admitted to West Point, where he graduated last in his class. During the Civil Was, he was first assigned as an aid to General George McClellan. He later was give the temporary rank of Brevet Brevadier General, but returning to the rank of Captain after the war. On February 9, 1864, he married Elizabeth Clift Bacon. They had no children. Custer died at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in Little Bighorn, Montana on June 25, 1876. He was initially buried on the battlefield, but his body was later removed to the cemetery at West Point. Description: In 1898, a prolific oil pool was discovered. The town of approximately 900 people grew to 12,000 in about two years as about 1,000 oil wells were drilled. The local college attendance dropped from 300 students to 25, as the students rushed to the oil field for jobs. The oil boom lasted for about two years and town decreased to the previous size.
