He moved with his family to Oneida County, New York, in 1833. In 1858, he moved with his wife and children to Toledo, Ohio, where he became the owner of a bookstore. General Hood is shown facing the camera, with emblems visible on his collar that indicate his rank in the Confederate military. John Bell Hood was born in 1831 in Owingsville, Kentucky. He was educated at the United States Military Academy, and graduated 44th out of 52 cadets in 1853. He served briefly in the U.S. Army, but after the Battle of Fort Sumter, he resigned to join the Confederate Army. He was wounded at both the Battle of Gettysburg and the Battle of Chickamauga. He settled in New Orleans, Louisiana, after the war. He died there on August 30, 1879, during the yellow fever epidemic. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Illustration of the entry of Morgan's Raiders into Washington, Ohio, published in Harper's Weekly on Saturday, August 15, 1863. In July of 1863, Confederate Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan led approximately 1,400 calvarymen on a 13-day raid through southern and eastern Ohio. At the Battle of Buffington Island, 750 men were captured and 300 escaped across the Ohio River. Morgan and 400 men headed north after the battle, but were captured soon after near New Lisbon, in Columbiana County, Ohio. View on Ohio Memory.
