Description: Group portrait of Socialist Party members gathered for the Socialist Convention and Eugene V. Debs Picnic held in Canton, Ohio, on June 16, 1918. On this visit to Canton in conjunction with the state's Socialist Party convention, in the midst of World War I, Debs gave a speech in the city's Nimisila Park criticizing the war and its capitalist aims. He described how wealthy American businessmen were profiting from the war while the working class suffered, and encouraged listeners to resist the military draft. Two weeks after his impassioned speech, the U.S. government charged him with violating the Espionage Act, which prohibited Americans from interfering with military service or otherwise obstructing the United States' war effort. Debs was found guilty and sentenced to ten years in prison, although President Warren G. Harding commuted his sentence on December 25, 1921. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Debs was a leading advocate for socialism in the United States of America, and ran as the party's candidate for president in five elections. This drawing shows Charles A. Dana, Assistant Secretary of War under President Grant and editor and co-owner of democratic magazine "The Sun," gesturing to a 'The Sun Microscope' with a glass plate of Republican presidential candidate James A. Garfield's record under scrutiny by an impish looking creature. To the left are glass plates for U.S. Presidents Ulysses S. Grant and Rutherford B. Hayes, both from Ohio. Dana holds a magnified view of what the creature sees through the microscope, three malevolent microbes surrounded by damning words such as bribery, fraud, and perjury. A Whig stump speaker known for his wit and eloquence, he was elected governor of Ohio in 1840 and campaigned for William Henry Harrison in his presidential victory that year. Corwin served six terms in Congress and one in the Senate, where he spoke out against the Mexican War in 1847. He also served as secretary of the treasury in the Fillmore administration and as President Lincoln's minister to Mexico. The child on the floor, which he says he actually loves best, is labeled "High Protection," as a reference to McKinley's goal of enacting high tariffs to protect American manufacturing. On his lap sits a baby identified as "Gold Standard." During his time in the House of Representatives, McKinley had focused on the tariff issue. However, the election of 1896 was focused on the question of the gold standard. The Republicans, led by McKinley, insisted that the national economy depended upon the currency remaining tied to the gold standard; that is, that the paper money be entirely backed by gold held by the federal government. The Democrats, and their candidate William Jennings Bryan, advocated a loosening of this standard by backing the currency with both gold and silver. McKinley received much of his financial backing from Republicans determined to maintain the gold standard, and this thus became the key issue he had to address during the campaign. Description: This cartoon shows President Rutherford B. Hayes, in office 1877-1881, leaving a baby on the doorstep of his successor, James Garfield, who has answered the door in his pajamas. The baby is identified as Civil Service Reform. Hayes sneaks away, looking over his shoulder and carrying a suitcase labeled "Savings" which he is taking back to his hometown of Fremont, Ohio. Prior to the Hayes administration, civil service posts within federal, state, and local governments were commonly awarded on the basis of party affiliation rather than merit. The reform of this practice was a key issue of concern for the Progressives. As president, Hayes had attempted to institute civil service reforms that would have required appointments to be based on merit. As a result, he angered many in his own Republican party. Hayes's efforts to reform the civil service were unfinished when his one term as president expired, leaving the problem for President Garfield, as referred to by the cartoon. Later in 1881, President Garfield was assassinated by a disappointed office-seeker. This encouraged Congress to finally pass a civil service reform bill, the Pendelton Act, in 1883. Description: Roxie Chambers leading Buckeye Women's Republican Glee Club members in "Ohio, My Ohio," January 1952. A singer and director of the South Methodist Church choir in Columbus, Chambers also directed the Buckeye Women's Republican Glee Club. Attending all the G.O.P. national conventions between 1932 and 1954, Chambers later became Republican State Central Committeewoman. When Chambers died in 1954, her pallbearers included Chalmers Wylie, James Rhodes, and other Republican dignitaries. Description: Published in 1922, this cartoon uses President Warren G. Harding’s well-known affinity for golf to speak to the frustration felt by the public and legislators eager to return to their home districts for upcoming elections. Many felt that the Harding administration was purposely delaying action on a number of issues including the bonus bill for army veterans, the coal strike, tariffs on foreign imports, etc. Ohio politician Warren Gamaliel Harding (1865-1923) served as state senator, lieutenant governor, and governor. In 1914 Harding was elected to the U. S. Senate. He launched his famous "front porch" 1920 presidential campaign from the porch of his Marion, Ohio, home. He won the presidency with sixty percent of the popular vote, promising a "return to normalcy" following the wave of reforms begun during Theodore Roosevelt's administration. As president, Harding’s administration was tainted by corruption, and the infamous "Teapot Dome" scandal (in which Harding's secretary of the interior leased a government petroleum reserve to a private oil company) nearly destroyed his presidency.
