Fort Firelands is a recreation of a frontier fort in Port Clinton, Ohio. The image was submitted by photographer Lawrence A. Lambert of Dayton, Ohio, in the Amateur category of the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Description: Two photographs document Camp Perry near Port Clinton, Ohio. A lack of soldiers with marksmanship skills in the Spanish-American War led to the founding of Camp Perry in 1906. Camp Perry grew to be one of the largest rifle ranges in the United States. It was used to train soldiers during World War I and World War II. The camp also housed German and Italian prisoners of war during World War II. Later, Camp Perry became a training facility for the Ohio National Guard. It also hosts the National Rifle Matches sponsored by the National Rifle Association (NRA). The photographs measure 8" x 10" (20.32 x 25.4 cm). View on Ohio Memory.

The Richardsonian Romanesque style building includes architectural details such as arches, steeply pitched gables with finials, and a 132 foot clock tower. Description: Johnson's Island, shown in an aerial here, was a military camp founded in 1862. Johnson's Island was a Union prison for Confederate officers during the American Civil War. It was located in Sandusky Bay of Lake Erie, near Sandusky, Ohio. The prison was built on this island for several reasons. Because of the island's isolated location, it would be very difficult for prisoners to escape. At the same time, the island was near several important Ohio cities and lines of road, rail and water transportation. It was relatively easy to acquire building supplies to construct the prison, as well as to secure food to feed the inmates. The prison at Johnson's Island opened in April 1862. It continued to house prisoners until September 1865. Estimates vary on the number of prisoners who spent time at Johnson's Island, but it is likely at least ten thousand men spent time there. Following the Civil War, federal officials sold the prison's buildings and land. Most of the island became farmland. By the 1950s, Johnson's Island became a residential community and a popular vacation spot. View on Ohio Memory.
