Description: A black-and-white photographic print of Abraham Lincoln's funeral casket on display, surrounded by mourners at Public Square in Cleveland, Ohio. Lincoln's casket was stopped in Cleveland en route to Springfield, Illinois, where he would be buried. The Civil War ended with the surrender of General Lee to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox on April 9, 1865. Five days later, Americans were horrified by the assassination of President Lincoln. Thousands viewed Lincoln's funeral procession as it traveled through Ohio on its way back to Springfield. The 1650-mile route from Washington D.C. to Springfield ran through Ohio from Erie, Pennsylvania, to Cleveland, then south to Columbus, and west to Indianapolis.
