Description: A black and white photograph, cut in an oval shape, features the exterior image of the Lincoln Memorial located in Washington, D.C at the west end of the National Mall. Finished in 1922, the Lincoln Memorial was built in memory of President Abraham Lincoln. The memorial was designed by architect Henry Bacon. The exterior, inspired by ancient Greece architecture, features 36 columns (19 columns are shown in the photograph). Above the columns, among the carved embellishments are the carved names of the 36 Union states and the dates when they joined the Union. Thomas Dow Jones carved the scene of the Confederates Generals Bowen, Montgomery and Pemberton surrendering to Union Generals Grant, McPherson, and Sherman after the Siege of Vicksburg in Vicksburg, Mississippi on July 4, 1863. A bust of Abraham Lincoln also sculpted by Thomas Dow Jones is included in the Lincoln-Vicksburg Monument. Description: On Christmas 1921, President Warren G. Harding was given a silver locket containing a portrait of Abraham Lincoln along with a lock of his hair. The engraved inscription on the back reads “This lock of hair was cut from the head of Abraham Lincoln April 15, 1865 by Schuyler Colfax for Mrs. Lincoln, from whom it passed to her sister [Mrs.] Ninian Edwards and to her daughter Julia Edwards Baker, then to Lucy Harmon McPherson, the daughter of Judge Harmon, Lincoln’s intimate friend and then to a friend of President Harding, who presents it to him as the exemplar of Lincoln’s spirit and the exponent of his democracy. Description: A photograph of a lithograph of Cincinnati, Ohio on September 17, 1859. Abraham Lincoln is speaking from a second floor balcony of the E & D Kinsey’s store on West 5th Street to a large crowd of several thousand people gathered in a public square. Also in the square is a pavilion reading "FIFTH ST MARKET." Fireworks can be seen streaking through the air in the background. "1859" is written on the back of the photograph. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Photograph of a commemorative marker at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus, memorializing a speech given there in 1859 by Abraham Lincoln just prior to his 1860 presidential campaign. The marker was erected on September 16, 1934, the 75th anniversary of Lincoln's speech. At the top of the plaque is a profile relief of Lincoln between his birth and death dates (1809 and 1865). The text of the plaque reads "Here stood Lincoln. At the invitation of the citizens of Columbus, Ohio, Abraham Lincoln delivered a memorable address here on the sixteenth day of September, eighteen hundred fifty nine. -- This commemorative marker was erected on the 75th anniversary of that event by the people of Ohio."
