Examples of wood turning and carving by members of Clinton camp. Photo by Federal Writers' Project." Camp Clinton may have been on the site of what is today Cowan Lake State Park. The state park was dedicated in 1968. Camp Clinton was first occupied by the Civilian Conservation Corps on July 22, 1939. The Civilian Conservation Corps was a work relief program established as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal that employed young men, ages 18-25 and later expanded to ages 17-28, with jobs in the natural resources field. This is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. The Ohio Guide Collection consists of 4,769 photographs collected for use in Ohio Guide and other publications of the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio from 1935-1939. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows the aftermath of the Moulton, Ohio, tornado of 1920. In this photograph, three unidentified people are standing in the middle of a dirt road. Visible behind them is a demolished building and skeletal trees stripped of branches. On March 28, 1920 (Palm Sunday), an outbreak of 30 tornadoes across eight states killed 153 persons, ranking it among the deadliest tornado outbreaks in U.S. history. Four killer tornadoes moved into western Ohio from Indiana and another moved across Wood and Ottawa Counties. There were 29 deaths from these tornadoes in Ohio. The community of Moulton, Ohio, west of Wapakoneta, was leveled and three people were killed. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Reuben Wood (1792[3?]-1864) served as governor of Ohio from 1850 to 1853. In 1850, he ran for governor on the Democratic ticket, ultimately defeating Whig Party candidate William Johnston and Free Soil candidate Edward Smith. By the time that Wood took office, the Ohio Constitutional Convention of 1850 was in session. When the Constitution of 1851 went into effect, it stated that governors would be elected on odd years. Wood's first term of office was limited to only one year, but he then was reelected to a second term in 1851. In 1853, Wood resigned from the governorship when he became American Consul to Chile. Description: In 1804, the Congregationalist Church authorized Reverend David Bacon to establish the town of Tallmadge, Ohio. Tallmadge was to be the center of the Congregationalist Church and its missionary efforts in the Connecticut Western Reserve. The church building was to be located in the center of town with all roads radiating outward like the sun’s rays. A Tallmadge committee of seven men developed plans for building the church in 1819 and appointed one of their members, Lemuel Porter of Conneticut, as the architect and builder. Tallmadge Church raising began in July of 1822. It was dedicated on September 8, 1825. Reflecting Porter's design, the wood, brace-framed church features a Federal/Greek Revival style portico, supported by four large columns, and a dominant one hundred foot high steeple with a weathervane. The main building measured 44-feet wide by 56-feet long. The State of Ohio acquired the church in 1971, which is now managed by the Ohio Historical Society, and is used for weddings and other special events. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This cooper's adz dates from 1850-1900. This black woodworking tool is made of wood and iron. There is a washer and nut on the bottom of the handle. A cooper's adz is a type of adz (wood-shaping tool) used by barrel-makers. The Ohio Historical Society received this cooper's adz from Miss Margaret E. Lautenklos of Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio, in 1939. This adz belonged to Adam Lautenklos, who was one of a family of German coopers who settled in the United States in approximately 1845.
