Description: Charles Waddell Chesnutt was an African American writer born on June 20, 1858, in Cleveland, Ohio to free African Americans. Both of his grandmothers may have been multiracial; and it is possible both of his grandfathers may have been white. Thus, he could have passed for white, but chose to be known as African-American.
