Description: Four 2" x 2" (5.08 x 5.08 cm) photographs document floats in the New Straitsville Moonshine Festival Parade in Perry County, Ohio. Held over Memorial Day weekend, the New Straitsville Moonshine Festival began in 1971. The year before, a homecoming celebration was held in honor of the town's centennial. The event was a success, and residents decided to hold the event every year. It was named the Moonshine Festival in honor of New Straitsville's history as a producer of bootleg moonshine during the Great Depression, when many of the region's coal mines were closed. The Moonshine Festival includes a parade, crowning of "Miss Moonshine," and the distilling of moonshine. While the sale of moonshine is illegal in Ohio, moonshine is made for demonstration purposes at the festival and later dumped. Moonshine is a type of whiskey distilled from corn mash (a mixture of corn, sugar, water, and yeast). The result is a high-proof whiskey, which was often made at night "by light of the moon" to avoid prosecution by law enforcement agencies. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated 1936, this photograph shows three ponies of Casper's Pony and Dog Show training for a routine. There are two dogs in cages and several dogs sitting to the left. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. Description: Photograph taken for the Columbus Free Press showing a musical group called "Chaotic Good" performing during the opening of the HAADCO Global Store on October 20 (year unknown). The acoustic trio plays a guitar, bowed psaltery and percussion instruments. The Columbus Free Press began as a bi-weekly publication in Columbus, Ohio, in 1970. An underground newspaper, it replaced the Ohio State University publication The People, Yes. The earliest known issue of the newspaper appeared on January 4, 1971. The newspaper underwent a series of name changes over the decades, with titles including the Columbus Free Press & Cowtown Times (1972-1976), the Columbus Freepress (1976-1992) and The Free Press (1992-1995). The paper, which covered many liberal and progressive causes, was an alternative to mainstream news sources in central Ohio with the slogan “The Other Side of the News.” In 1995, the paper ceased publication briefly before reemerging as a website in early 1996, and returning as a print publication under the Free Press title in the form of a quarterly journal in 1998. Published under various frequencies during the first part of the 21st century, the Free Press again became a nonprofit monthly publication in 2017 with both a print and web presence, published by the Columbus Institute for Contemporary Journalism and operated by a volunteer staff and board. Description: Three photographs document a Soap Box Derby race in Akron, Ohio. Myron Scott, a Dayton Daily News photographer, established the All-American Soap Box Derby in Dayton in 1933. The first race was such a success that another was planned for the following year, with support of newspapers across the country. Akron Beacon Journal sports editor Jim Schlemmer was instrumental in garnering support from Akron's rubber companies for the race. Shortly after the 1934 race, a delegation from Akron met with Derby sponsor Chevrolet to explore the possibility of making the Derby a national event and moving it to Akron. They were successful and in 1935 the Soap Box Derby was held in Akron on Tallmadge Hill. The following year the Derby was held at Derby Downs, a Works Progress Administration project built adjacent to the Akron Municipal Airport. Each summer the Derby attracts youth from all over the world to compete in the Gravity Grand Prix. The photographs measure 3" x 5" (7.62 x 12.7 cm). View on Ohio Memory.

Description: These two photographs of children playing with mirrors were taken at the 1969 Ohio State Fair in Columbus. The slides measure 2" x 2" (5.08 x 5.08 cm). The Ohio State Fair was an important opportunity for farmers to promote their crops and livestock and to learn about advances in agricultural machinery. The first state fair was held in Cincinnati in 1850. In the ten years that followed, Newark, Sandusky, Zanesville and Cleveland hosted the fair, before it settled permanently in Columbus. Description: Sixteen photographs document the home of Cleveland iron-ore magnate William Gwinn Mather. In 1905, Mather consulted two nationally renowned landscape architects, Warren H. Manning (1860-1938) and Charles A. Platt (1861-1933), about plans for a new estate. Manning was a legendary plantsman and a park- and city-planning specialist who had worked for Mather on several northern Michigan mine projects while employed by Frederick Law Olmsted. Platt was a young artist-turned-architect widely praised for adapting Italian principles to American soil. Each encouraged Mather to purchase a five-acre parcel east of the city directly on Lake Erie, anticipating that the ever-changing lake panorama would give the garden landscape great distinction. Platt accepted Mather's commission with the provision that he design both the new house and landscape; Manning, disappointedly, agreed to serve as "planting adviser" on the project. The diverse partners began their work in 1906. Platt, a champion of formality, recommended symmetry and classical ornament, while Manning, a proponent of an emerging "American style," favored irregular groupings of mostly indigenous plants. Their unintended collaboration at Gwinn led to an exceptionally strong and varied design. The photographs were taken by Ihna Thayer Frary. The Ihna Thayer Frary Audiovisual Collection was given to the Ohio Historical Society by Mr. Frary in two sections. One was in March of 1963 and the remainder in May of 1965 by his sons, Dr. Spencer G. and Allen T. Frary following their father's death. I.T. Frary (1873-1965) was the publicity and membership secretary for the Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. He taught for many years at the Cleveland Institute of Art and Western Reserve University's School of Architecture. He did much research of Ohio and American architecture and was the author of seven major works and numerous scholarly articles on architectural and art history. Description: Three photographs document scenes at the annual Ski Carnival at Snow Trails Ski Resort near Mansfield, Ohio in 1967. The first photograph shows the Ski Carnival Queen. Two other photographs of resort visitors are also included. The Snow Trails Ski Carnival began in 1961 and features a Bikini Race, in which skiers compete wearing swimsuits. Other events at the carnival include serious ski racing, dances in the lodge, and the crowning of the Ohio Winter Ski Carnival Queen. The photographs measure 2" x 2" (5.08 x 5.08 cm). Snow Trails Ski Resort opened in 1960. Founder Dave Carto became interested in the sport while serving in the Army in Minnesota. Snow Trails was the first ski resort built that relied completely on artificial snow. It became the first resort in Ohio to operate a double chair lift in 1962. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Made of dark gray sandstone, this pipe in effigy (a likeness or representation) of a squirrel was excavated from Tremper Mound, a Hopewell culture site located five miles north of Portsmouth in Scioto County. The squirrel is seated erect with its head forward and forelegs against its chest. Slight modeling suggests hind legs. The paws on all four feet are identified by parallel incised lines. The squirrel's tail is erect against the back, and the hairs of the tail are indicated by parallel oblique incised lines. The mouth and eyes are shown as incised lines, and its ears project above the head. The effigy was broken off the platform, and a slight amount of restoration was done on animal's right pelvis and on underside of platform at mouthpiece end. The effigy pipe measures approximately 1.5" x 3.5" x 1.25" (3.81 x 8.89 x 3.18 cm). This pipe is part of a large collection of pipes found at Tremper Mound. The pipes were carved of Ohio pipestone, a silica-based material that can be easily carved when freshly quarried from the hills east of the Scioto River. The pipes represent a variety of animals significant to the Hopewell, including owls, wolves, deer and beaver. Skilled Hopewell craftsmen carved the pipes with flint knives and some are embellished with pearls or copper. In Ohio, the Hopewell Indians (100 B.C.-A.D. 500) built burial mounds and large earthen enclosures in geometric shapes (circles, squares, and octagons) to mark the places where the people gathered periodically to participate in many social and ceremonial events. Some of these sites were quite large--the Newark Earthworks complex extends over a 4-square-mile area. The Hopewell people also maintained a large trade network extending as far as the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming, the Florida coast and Appalachians, and northern Lake Superior. View on Ohio Memory.
