Description: Confederate currency produced in Augusta, Georgia during the Civil War in the amount of twenty-five cents. Confederate currency was originally produced in the capital of Montgomery, Alabama. After Virginia seceded from the Union the capital was moved to Richmond in May 1861, where currency was then printed. Toward the end of the Civil War, the currency significantly lost value and many of the notes in existence were destroyed. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Illustration of a conversation between Ulysses S. Grant and John C. Pemberton after the surrender of Vicksburg published in "Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War" by Alfred H. Guernsey. The Battle of Vicksburg, which lasted from May 1864 to July 4, 1863, resulted in the separation of the Confederate states west of the river from the rest of the Confederacy after General Pemberton surrendered to General Grant. Ulysses S. Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant, Ohio. During the U. S. Civil War, Grant was promoted to the rank of General and granted command of the Union army by President Abraham Lincoln. Description: Illustration drawn by political cartoonist Thomas Nash for Harper's Weekly, titled "Compromise with the South--Dedicated to the Chicago Convention," September 3, 1864. This cartoon is meant as a criticism of the "Peace Democrats" who took part in the the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August of 1864, led in part by Clement Vallandigham of Ohio. Known as "Copperheads," this segment of the Democratic Party saw the poor performance of Union troops against the Confederacy as reason to negotiate with the South, thereby rendering the sacrifices of Union soldiers in vain. A defeated Union soldier is pictured shaking hands with Jefferson Davis, Confederate President, as Columbia (representing the United States) weeps and an African American family is returned to slavery. Shortly after the Chicago Convention, the tide turned significantly in favor of the Union forces. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Lithograph illustration by Alfred E. Mathews showing the Female Seminary in Nashville, Tennessee, which served as the barracks of the 51st Regiment Ohio Volunteers and as Headquarters of the Provost Marshall, Colonel Stanley Matthews, March 1862. Below the illustration and its caption is an excerpt from the Circular of the Female Academy, in which the institution's president, C. D. Elliott, emphasizes support for the Confederate cause during the Civil War. Mathews (1831-1874) was born in Bristol, England, but moved with his family to settle in Rochester, Ohio, when he was two years old. He was working as a schoolteacher in Alabama when the Civil War broke out, and returned north to enlist in the 1st Ohio Artillery in August 1861. He later joined the 31st Ohio Volunteer Infantry, and fought in battles including Corinth, Stone River, Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge. During his three-year enlistment he drew numerous sketches of scenes he witnessed, which were made into lithographs and sold, including publication in Harper's Weekly. He moved west following the war and continued his work as an artist, until his sudden death at the age of 43. He is buried on his ranch near Longmount, Colorado. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This cartoon shows the Democratic presidential candidate in 1880, General Winfield Scott Hancock, inspecting a selection of exhibits demonstrating the association of the Democrats with the Southern cause in the recent Civil War. Looking at a donkey, the traditional symbol of the Democratic party, made up of two hindquarters sewn together, Hancock exclaims: "Great Scott! Am I to be head of that?" The donkey symbolizes the difficulty the Democrats had in re-defining themselves as a national party after the Civil War. Description: This illustration of John Hunt Morgan, a Civil War Confederate general, is from a German history textbook entitled "Gesthichte des Burgerkriep in den Uereinigton Stoaten," about the United States Civil War. John Hunt Morgan was born in Huntsville, Alabama, on June 1, 1825. He is known for "Morgan's Raid," which he led during the American Civil War. In 1863, his troops rode from Tennessee through Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana, resulting in the northernmost presence established by Confederate forces. He died on September 4, 1864, in Greeneville, Tennessee, killed by Union cavalry men while attempting to escape. He was buried in Lexington Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.

Guns can be seen strapped to many of the men's backs, and one man near the front has a guitar or banjo at his side. Another man near the front holds a fancy women's parasol over his head. The original illustration appeared in an 1888 book entitled "The Story of Ohio" by Alexander Black. Led by John Hunt Morgan, Morgan's Raiders raided from Tennessee through Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio. Description: This portrait of William Clarke Quantrill was taken from "Quantrill and the Border Wars" by William Elsey Connelley, 1910. The image caption reads "WILLIAM CLARKE QUANTRILL THE GUERILLA CHIEF" Born in Canal Dover (now Dover), Ohio, Quantrill led The Quantrill Raiders, Confederate soldiers who operated in the border area between Kansas and Missouri during the American Civil War. This group was known for targeting Union forces and sympathizers. Quantrill's tactics and brutality scared Confederate leaders and he was never fully sanctioned by them. Among his raiders were Frank and Jesse James. Quantrill was severely wounded during a raid in Kentucky in May 1865. He died on June 6, 1865, in Louisville, Kentucky. View on Ohio Memory.
