Description: Photograph of the former Cuyahoga County Courthouse, located on Seneca Street (now West 3rd Street), 1889, from the collection of Louis Baus. Baus, a native of Cleveland, Ohio, was born in 1875. He began his career as a professional photographer doing studio work before becoming a staff photographer for the Cleveland Advocate in 1911. Baus worked for the paper, which was later purchased by the Cleveland Plain Dealer, for thirty-eight years until his death in 1949. He was also an avid collector of historic photographs. The Louis Baus Collection consists of over one thousand photographs mounted in eleven albums, showing historic Cleveland, the village of Zoar and Ohio covered bridges and mills. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Caption reads: "The Old Courthouse, Dayton, Ohio. Montgomery County." Construction began on the Montgomery County Courthouse in 1847 and was completed in April 1850. The Greek Revival courthouse is allegedly in the style of the Theseum, the Greek temple of Theseus, located below the Parthenon. Cincinnati architect Howard Daniels designed the building, which cost $100,000. It was constructed of local white limestone. To prevent fires, the only wood used in the building is in the inner doors, window sashes, and furniture. The building served as the home of the Montgomery County Historical Society until March 2000. Description: This photograph shows the Columbus City Hall (center) and the U.S. Post Office and Courthouse (left) taken from the State Office Building., facing north. The City Hall, located 90 West Broad Street, bounded by Gay, Front, and Broad Sts., and Riverside Drive, occupies, with its park, and entire block in the heart of the civic center. The 5-story structure of Indiana limestone, in Greco-Roman style, was designed by the Allied Architects Association of Columbus and cost $1,700,000. Three of the four sections of the building, which surround a court, were completed in 1928, and the fourth was dedicated in 1936. The hall houses various municipal departments and contains a city council chamber that originally sat more than 400 people. At night multi-colored lights played upon a fountain before the Broad Street entrance. The U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, sometimes referred to as the Federal Building, is located at 85 Marconi Boulevard at the corner of Gay Street. Completed in 1934, it is the Federal Government’s contribution to the civic center. It occupies a triangular tract on the east bank of the Scioto River, and housed the main post office, Federal courts and offices, and the U.S. Weather Bureau station. The 4-story building is of sandstone and marble construction, with classic lines. Richards, McCarty & Bulford, of Columbus, designed the structure, which cost almost $1,800,000 to build. Description: This image shows the Hardin County Courthouse in Kenton, Ohio. This building was completed in 1915. It was the third court house in Kenton, Ohio. The first one was build in 1834 and after it was destroyed by fire, the second on was build in 1880. The current building is doubly symmetric, meaning that the north and west sides are identical to the south and east sides. It is a neoclassic architectural style made of Indian gray limestone. Description: This image shows the facade of the Tuscarawas Courthouse in New Philadelphia, Ohio. This courthouse was built in 1884 of Medina quarry sandstone. It was renovated and restored in 1996. This photograph is an interior view of an empty courtroom at the Clermont County Courthouse. The current courthouse is located at 270 Main Street in Batavia, Ohio and was completed in 1936, having been designed by the architectural firm of Hunt & Allan in the Neoclassical style for $100,000. The building has a rectangular footprint and is two stories high. The facade of the building is lined with red brick and limestone trimwork. The building's main entrance is accessed by a flight of stairs and is framed by four large Tuscan piers supporting an entablature above. A window is located to each side of the central door with a window directly in line on the second floor. The wings to either side of the entrance projection contains three windows on each floor. The flat roof is hidden behind a solid balustrade. An addition was finished in 1998 and is located to the rear of the old courthouse. The design was approved by the commissioners and was submitted by Steinkamp, Steinkamp & Hampton. The building was designed in Greek Revival style and contains a central pediment supported by Tuscan columns with brick bases. The pediment contains an elliptical window. A drum rises from the roofline and is topped by a clock tower capped by a dome. It was constructed under the Works Progress Administration of the 1930s and unfortunately an elaborate courthouse was not feasible due to the Great Depression. View on Ohio Memory.
