Description: This is a modern contact print made from a glass plate negative depicting Sallie Stem and Esther Clarkson Russell Cooke playing croquet on Gibraltar Island, Ottawa County, Ohio, in the summer of 1886. Sallie was the niece of Gibraltar caretaker Anna McMeens. Esther was the wife of Reverend Henry Cooke and daughter-in-law of prominent businessman Jay Cooke. For many years Gibraltar was the summer home of the Jay Cooke family. Today, the island is owned by The Ohio State University, who maintains the Stone Laboratory, a freshwater research and teaching facility. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Portrait of Alice Ruth Moore Dunbar Nelson, wife of poet Paul Laurence Dunbar, ca. 1907-1909. The Dunbar's were married in March, 1898 and separated four years later, but never divorced. Paul Laurence Dunbar died in 1906 and four years later Alice married Harry A Callis, a physician. This marriage ended in divorce. In 1916, she married Robert J. Nelson, a poet and civil rights activist. Alice was a poet, journalist and political activist. She was a graduate of Straight University (now Dillard University). She died on September 18, 1935, in Wilmington, Delaware. View on Ohio Memory.

Kinley was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's department store, and later as a travelling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). He was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas.
