Description: Engraved portrait of Thomas H. White who was president of the White Sewing Machine Company located in Cleveland, Ohio, ca. 1875-1900. In 1858 White began manufacturing sewing machines in Templeton, Massachusetts. He relocated the company to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1866. It was incorporated as the White Sewing Machine Corporation in 1876. The company grew during the twentieth century and continues to manufacture sewing machines today. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This is an engraved portrait of Ferdinand Schumacher, a manufacturer from Akron, Ohio, ca. 1875-1900. Schumacher was the first to mill oatmeal in the United States and founded American Oatmeal Company. That company became the General Mills American Oatmeal Company, while still under the ownership of Schumacher. That company was one of several that merged to form the Quaker Oatmeal Company. Description: This photograph gives a birds-eye view of the east bank of the Scioto River in downtown Columbus, Ohio, ca. 1960. Visible in the left side of the photograph are the Broad Street and Town Street bridges over the Scioto River. The tallest building is the LaVeque Tower, formerly the American Insurance Union Citadel. It was dedicated on September 21, 1927. The 47-story tall skyscraper, located at 50 West Broad Street, was designed by architect C. Howard Crane in the Art Deco style. Due to the Great Depression, the American Insurance Union went bankrupt and sold the building. The tower was purchased by John Lincoln and Leslie L. LeVeque in 1945. It remained the highest tower in Columbus until 1973. The light-colored building to the south of Leveque Tower was originally The Ohio State Office Building. Constructed during 1930-1933, the 14-story building was designed by Cincinnati architect Harry Hake and serves as a classic example of the Art Moderne style. The building was later known as the Ohio Judicial Center until 2011, when the state Supreme Court named the center in honor of the late Chief Justice Thomas J. Moyer, who was the second-longest-serving chief justice in state history at the time of his death in April 2010. Description: This photograph shows a view of South High Street Columbus, Ohio, looking north. A streetcar and autos share the road; parked cars line both sides of the street. The sidewalks are crowded with pedestrians. The top of the LeVeque Tower is seen in the far background. Columbus's famed Neil House hotel is situated in the middle of the block. The hotel was erected in the 1820s as a tavern. Proprietor William built a hotel on the site in 1839; this structure burned down on Nov. 6, 1860 and was replaced in 1862 by new building. In turn, that hotel was replaced in 1924 by the structure seen in the photo. This 600-room hotel was torn down in the 1980s to make room for the expanded Huntington Bank Building. Description: Interior view of Kinley's Department Store in Upper Sandusky, Ohio. Opened by John H. Kinley in 1896, the store operated until 1929 at 132 North Sandusky Avenue. This photograph was taken of his father's store by Harry Evan Kinley (1882-1969), a native of Upper Sandusky. He was active in local events and organizations, and spent his professional career as a clerk at his father's store, and later as a travelling salesman for the Marion Paper & Supply Company (1934-1962). Kinley was also an avid lifelong photographer, and the bulk of the Harry Kinley Collection is comprised of glass plate negatives documenting the Kinley family, the city of Upper Sandusky and Wyandot County and surrounding areas. Campbell spent thirty years with Youngstown Sheet and Tube, and during that time he participated in numerous charitable and civic activities. In 1926 the residents of East Youngstown chose to rename their city Campbell in recognition of his contributions to the community. Campbell died September 20, 1933, at the age of 79. In 1926 the residents of East Youngstown chose to rename their city Campbell in recognition of Campbell's contributions to the community. Campbell died September 20, 1933, at the age of 79. Description: James A. Campbell, President of Youngstown Sheet and Tube, at his desk, ca. 1920-1929. James Anson Campbell was born in Ohltown, Trumbull County, Ohio, on September 11, 1854. Despite achieving great affluence during his life Campbell did not come from a wealthy upbringing. The youngest of eight children, Campbell attended public schools in the Youngstown area. Upon graduating from Niles High School, Campbell attended Hiram College for a year. Although he had received an appointment to West Point, Campbell declined the appointment instead choosing to assist with his family's farm. In 1900 he co-founded the Youngstown Iron Sheet and Tube Company, later to be renamed the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company, in East Youngstown with George D. Wick in 1900. Campbell spent thirty years with Youngstown Sheet and Tube and during that time he participated in numerous charitable and civic activities. In 1926 the residents of East Youngstown chose to rename their city Campbell in recognition of Campbell's contributions to the community. Campbell died September 20, 1933, at the age of 79.
