Description: Taken by photographer Louis Baus, this photographic reproduction shows the grave of Alexander Gunn (1837-1901), also called the Alexander Gunn Monument. Gunn, a business man from Cleveland, chose to live in Zoar upon his retirement, and encouraged the Separatists to keep the commune running in the late 1890s when the community eventually dissolved in 1898. In 1901, Gunn became ill and traveled to Germany where he soon died thereafter. His ashes were sent back to Zoar where they were interred on the hillside where he grave is marked by "Gunn's Monument" a large boulder donated by friends of his. Led by Joseph Bimeler (sometimes spelled Bäumeler) in 1817, a group of Lutheran separatists left the area of Germany known as Wurttemberg and eventually established the small community of Zoar in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. The community of Zoar was not originally organized as a commune, but its residents had a difficult time surviving in 1818 and early 1819. As a result, on April 19, 1819, the group formed the Society of Separatists of Zoar. Each person donated his or her property to the community as a whole, and in exchange for their work, the society would provide for them. In the decades following the establishment of the Zoar commune, the Separatists experienced economic prosperity. The community was almost entirely self-sufficient and sold any surpluses to the outside world. In addition to agriculture, Zoar residents also worked in a number of industries, including flour mills, textiles, a tin shop, copper, wagon maker, two iron foundries, and several stores. The society also made money by contracting to build a seven-mile stretch of the Ohio and Erie Canal. By the second half of the 19th century, the community was quite prosperous. After Bimeler's death in 1853, the unity of the village declined, and by 1898 the Zoarites disbanded the society. The remaining residents divided the property, and the community continued to prosper in Zoar. Louis Baus was a prominent photographer in Cleveland, Ohio, who began his career with studio work, but in 1911 became a staff writer for the Cleveland Advocate, a local newspaper that was later purchased by the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Description: This is a watercolor on paper that shows an urn and grave monument beneath a tree. Two weeping women visit the grave and a white dove flies above them with a wreath in its beak. The urn is inscribed "1815" and the monument is inscribed "A memorial of John Whipple, died March 29th, aged 35 years." A note written at the bottom of the painting reads "John Whipple--was buried at Cincinnati, March 30, 1815, aged 35--was death denied poor man would live in vain." Description: This photograph provides an aerial view of the Harding Tomb, a circular monument of white Georgia marble containing the remains of President Warren G. Harding and his wife Florence Kling Harding. The monument, surrounded by ten acres of landscaped grounds, is similar in appearance to a round Greek temple. The site is managed by the Ohio History Connection. Warren Gamaliel Harding (1865-1923) was born in Corsica (now called Blooming Grove), a small town in Morrow County, Ohio. Harding graduated from Ohio Central College in Iberia at the age of sixteen. His family moved to Marion, where Harding taught school and briefly studied law. He worked occasionally as a reporter for a local paper before buying the Marion Star in 1884. Within five years, the Star was one of the most successful small-town newspapers in the state. Harding became popular as the leader of the Citizen's Coronet Band, which played at political rallies, and for his skill as an orator. Willing to follow the lead of political bosses, Harding advanced rapidly in Ohio politics, serving as state senator and lieutenant governor. In 1914 Harding was elected to the U. S. Senate. He launched his famous "front porch" 1920 presidential campaign from the porch of his Victorian home in Marion. He won the presidency with sixty percent of the popular vote, promising a "return to normalcy" following the wave of reforms begun during Theodore Roosevelt's administration. As president, Harding appointed several friends to federal office who proved untrustworthy. His administration was tainted by corruption, and the infamous "Teapot Dome" scandal (in which Harding's secretary of the interior leased a government petroleum reserve to a private oil company) nearly destroyed his presidency. After he died in office in August 1923, other scandals were uncovered, further tarnishing Harding's reputation. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This photograph shows the tomb in which the remains of President Warren G. Harding and Mrs. Florence Kling Harding were laid to rest in their hometown of Marion, Ohio, ca. 1940-1970. Construction of the tomb was completed in 1927 and President and Mrs. Harding's bodies were moved to the tomb in December of that year. On June 16, 1931 the tomb was officially dedicated by President Calvin Coolidge. This photograph is part of a photograph album in the Warren G. Harding Photograph Collection (P146). Warren G. Harding, the 29th President of the United States (1921-1923), was born in Blooming Grove, Ohio, in 1865. At age 14, Harding attended Ohio Central College in Iberia, Ohio, where he edited the campus newspaper and became an accomplished public speaker. He married Florence Kling de Wolfe in 1891, and embarked on his political career in 1900 by winning a seat in the Ohio legislature. After serving two terms as an Ohio Senator, Harding served as Lieutenant Governor in 1904 for two years before returning to the newspaper business. Although he lost the 1910 gubernatorial race, Harding was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1914. Political insider Harry Daugherty promoted Harding for the Republican presidential nomination in 1920. His front porch campaign was centered on speeches given from his home in Marion, Ohio, pledging to return the country to “normalcy” in this post World War I era. Harding easily won the election, gaining 61 percent of the popular vote. On August 2, 1923, Harding unexpectedly died from a massive heart attack while touring the western United States, and is entombed in the Marion Cemetery. View on Ohio Memory.

Harding and his wife, Florence. Harding was the 29th president of the U.S, (1921–1923) and the first president elected after women were allowed to vote in national elections. The Harding Tomb is a dramatic marble memorial to commemorate President and Mrs. Harding, and to serve as their tomb. Shortly after Harding died in office, The Harding Memorial Association was formed to raise money for a memorial site in honor of the late president. Description: The completed tomb of President William McKinley in Canton, Ohio. William McKinley, Jr. was president of the United States from March, 1897 to September, 1901. McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio, but he spent much of his life in Canton, Ohio. Elected to two terms as president, McKinley's second term began as a celebration of the United States' victory in the Spanish-American War. Economic prosperity also seemed to have returned, following the Panic of 1893. The United States was involved in the Philippino Insurrection, as the nation tried to solidify its control over the Philippine Islands, but most Americans remained unconcerned with this conflict. To celebrate these accomplishments, McKinley embarked on a cross-country tour during the summer of 1901. Before returning to Washington, DC, McKinley stopped at Buffalo, New York, to give a speech at the Pan American Exposition. Leon Czolgosz assassinated McKinley at the exposition. McKinley died on September 14, 1901, eight days after being shot. To honor McKinley, schoolchildren from across the United States donated money to build the McKinley National Memorial in Canton. The McKinley Memorial Association, formed after the president's death, helped raise the funds. The memorial also is a tomb, with McKinley, his wife Ida Saxton McKinley, and two of the McKinleys' children interred inside. Harold Van Buren Magonigle designed the McKinley National Memorial. Construction began on the memorial in 1905. Workers used over two million bricks in the tomb's construction. The memorial is capped with two domes. One dome, which is fifty feet in diameter and seventy-five feet high, is known as the interior dome. The exterior dome is seventy-five feet in diameter and ninety-five feet high. President Theodore Roosevelt, who became president upon McKinley's death, dedicated the memorial on September 30, 1907. View on Ohio Memory.
