Description: This is a drawing of the Ohio Capitol building in Zanesville, Ohio. The building was constructed 1809-1810, and in 1810, Zanesville replaced Chillicothe as Ohio's capital until 1812, after which the capital returned to Chillicothe. Later that year, Columbus became Ohio's capital. The building in Zanesville closely resembled the statehouse in Chillicothe, but was built in the Federal Style, which incorporates more refined architectural staples, rather than the Colonial Style, which is characterized by plainer architectural design. This is actually The Stone Academy, located at 115 Jefferson Street. This building was originally constructed in 1809 with funds donated by Dr. Increase Mathews, Levi Whipple, and Ebenezer Buckingham, in Putnam, which was then a separate and rival community. Built of sandstone from nearby Putnam Hill, it was originally meant to serve as the new state capitol building. John McIntire and others construct a building of their own to compete for the honor. State legislature selected Zanesville to serve as the capital of Ohio from 1810 to 1812, and the Putnam building became and school and held many for public functions. The State Abolition Society held meetings there in 1835 and 1839, and also served as a station on the Underground Railroad. In 1840, it was converted to a private residence and was the childhood home of author, actress and activist Elizabeth Robins. In 1983, Mrs. Richard (Lydia McHenry) Taylor left the building to the Pioneer and Historical Society and it has served as a museum since. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Dated ca. 1935-1940, this photograph shows the Buckingham House, located at 405 Moxahala Avenue in Zanesville, Ohio, in Muskingum County. The house was built in 1819 for Alva Buckingham, and was a stop on the Underground Railroad. The two-story brick and sandstone building featured a semicircular doorway, recessed under a brick arch, and a lead glass, fan-shaped lintel above the white wood paneled door. The sidelights on either side of the door are curved windows made up of narrow pieces of glass. The Buckingham House is now a bed and breakfast. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. This photo was most likely taken at S.A. Weller Pottery Company in Zanesville, Ohio. S.A. Weller Pottery, located at 1888 Ceramic Avenue, was generally considered to be the largest art pottery maker in the world. Founded in 1872 by Samuel A. Weller in Fultenham, Ohio, he moved production to Zanesville in 1888 and built his first factory in 1890. The company handled all aspects if production, from digging the clay all the way through the firing in the kiln. Some of the most popular of his patterns were: Hudson, Sicard, Louwelsa, Woodcraft and Camelot. The S.A. Weller Pottery Company closed in 1948. View on Ohio Memory.

S.A. Weller Pottery located at 1888 Ceramic Avenue, was generally considered to be the largest art pottery producer in the world. The company was founded in 1872 by Samuel A. Weller (1851- 1925), in Fultenham, Ohio. Weller moved production to Zanesville in 1888 and built his first factory in 1890. The company handled all aspects of production, from digging the clay all the way through the firing in the kiln. At first, Weller produced everyday items such as cookware and flower pots, but in 1895 the company began producing more decorative items such as vases and figurines. Some of the most popular Weller patterns are: Hudson, Sicard, Louwelsa, Woodcraft and Camelot. Sam Weller's Pottery closed in 1948. Though many think that Weller Pottery is just an imitation of Roseville and Rookwood pottery, Weller pieces are displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and at other museums. Ayers, founders of the Ayers Mineral Company in Zanesville. The Ayers were avid art collectors and donated their personal collection to the Institute, which included European master paintings, glass, ceramics, sculpture, and prints. In 1975, the institution relocated to its current location at 620 Military Road in Zanesville and its name changed to the Zanesville Art Center. Description: Reverse reads: "Code - F1; Class - Industry - Pottery Mfg.; Ident. - Pouring Moulds." The bowls on the table behind the potter appear to be similar to some make by Roseville Pottery. Roseville Pottery was founded in 1892 by George F. Young in Roseville, Ohio, at first making painted flower pots. In 1898, he moved to Zanesville, Ohio, into the former Clark Stoneware Plant building, to try and compete with nearby art pottery companies Weller and Owens. In 1900, they began producing the high quality art pottery line known as Roseville Rozane Ware. Roseville was the first pottery in Ohio to use a tunnel kiln, which greatly increased their production capacity. Roseville Pottery closed in 1954. View on Ohio Memory.
