In 1882, Jeptha Wade, founder of early telecommunications giant Western Union, donated the large tract of land that became Wade Park. In 1916, in accordance with the terms of Wade's gift, The Cleveland Museum of Art opened in the park. Over the years, many other institutions, as well as their benefactors, have made their homes here. In 1931, The Cleveland Orchestra found a permanent home in Severance Hall, and University Hospitals of Cleveland was dedicated, firmly establishing University Circle as a premier urban district. Description: Portrait of Edward W. Scripps (1854-1926), ca. 1900. After purchasing the Cleveland Penny Press in 1878, Scripps built the first newspaper chain in the United States. Through a series of acquisitions, he formed United Press International, which sent reporters all around the world to report on news events instead of relying on reporters from other papers for information. Shortly after establishing the United Press Association, Scripps also created the Newspaper Enterprise Association. This organization provided Scripps' newspapers and other papers around the world with editorial cartoons, feature stories, and pictures. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Theodore Burton (1851-1929) was born in Jefferson, Ohio, on December 20, 1851, and graduated from Oberlin College in 1872. He began his political career in 1889 after being elected as a Representative and years later as a Senator from Ohio. Throughout his life he had interrupted spells in the US House of Representative and Senate. In 1916, he was a candidate for Republican nomination for president. In 1922, President Warren G. Harding appointed Burton to represent the United States at the World War Debt Funding Commission, and Burton served as the head of the American delegation at the Geneva Conference in 1925. He died in Washington, DC, on October 28, 1929. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: The Arcade opened in May 1890. Construction cost $875,000 and was financed by some of Cleveland’s businessmen like Steven V. Harkness, John D. Rockefeller, Louis Severence, Charles Bush, and Marcus Hanna. It Is one of Cleveland’s best-known landmarks. Designed by John M. Eisemann and George H. Smith as a big city mercantile center, the five-story galleries connect the ten story towers facing the city's two main thoroughfares. Of unique architectural design and of daring construction, its exterior is Romanesque Revival, a popular Victorian style from 1875-1900. The building was once known as Cleveland’s Crystal Palace. The building went through a $60 million renovation project in 2001, through a financial partnership between Related Midwest, Hyatt Development Corporation, and Mayor Michael White. It is located on East Fourth Street between Euclid and Superior Avenues. The top three stories are the Hyatt Regency Cleveland and the lower two floors include retail and a food court. Description: Re-enactment of the landing of Moses Cleaveland and other pioneers at Conneaut Harbor in Conneaut, Ohio. The re-enactment was held July 4, 1976, as part of the year's Bicentennial celebrations. The participants in the re-enactment are wearing pioneer costumes, and a man can be seen lifting a young girl from a canoe to a woman standing on shore, as a crowd looks on. The photograph was entered by photographer Carl Feather in the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest. In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Description: Postcard of the monument to Volney Rogers at the entrance to Mill Creek Park in Youngstown, Ohio, ca. 1939-1960. Rogers drafted and worked to pass the Township Parks Improvement Act of 1891 and led the campaign to establish the Youngstown Township Park District. He is particularly recognized for his personal effort to preserve Mill Creek Park. The sculpture of Rogers was created by Frederick Hibbard, a sculptor from Cleveland, Ohio, and installed in 1920. Description: Aerial view photograph of Shaker Heights, Ohio, looking to the north. The houses on the lower edge of the image face Shaker Boulevard. The road on the left is Leighton Road, while the one on the right is Southington Road. Original description reads: "Shaker Hts. residences (Shaker Lake in background)." The city's name has origins in two local sources: the community was laid out on land formerly owned by the North Union Community of the United Society of Believers, more commonly known as Shakers, and "Heights" refers to the plateau east of Cleveland that rises sharply in elevation from 582 feet above sea level at the base of the Cedar Glen Parkway to 950 feet above sea level in nearby Cleveland Heights; Shaker Heights' elevation is 1050 feet above sea level. Ralph Russell established the North Union Settlement in 1822 with just over 80 individuals. In 1826, the group dammed Doan Brook, thus creating the Lower Lake and establishing a gristmill and a sawmill. Later, in 1854, the community built a second dam, creating the Upper Lake, and constructed another mill. Also called "The Valley of God's Pleasure," the colony peaked around 1850 with about 300 settlers. As the Shakers practiced celibacy, the colony faded away and was closed in 1889. In 1905, the land was bought by brothers M.J. and O.P. Van Sweringen, who envisioned the first garden-styled suburb in Ohio for the site. The brothers constructed homes, set aside land for churches and schools, and planted trees. Originally referred to as Shaker Village, the community was incorporated in 1912 and reached city status in the 1930s. Shaker Heights is known for its stringent building codes and zoning laws, which have helped to maintain the community's housing stock and identity throughout the years. Approximately seventy percent of the city of Shaker Heights is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Shaker Village Historic District. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Caption on reverse reads: "Track One. Big Four Station." The locomotive steam engine in this photograph bears the number 4861. The train is pulling cars bearing the name "New York Central." More information is needed as to the exact type of steam engine. This photograph shows the CCC & St. L (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus & St. Louis) passenger station in Springfield, Ohio. It was built in 1910, on Union Street, between Fountain and Limestone continued operation until 1953. This building replaced an older "Union Station" which was on Washington Street, between Fountain and Limestone. It was demolished in the 1970s to make room for the Spring Street Bridge and additional parking for Clark County College. The main part of the structure is a grand, square, stone building with a peaked tile roof and a large rounded window taking up almost the entire front facade of the building.
