Today the Hopewell Mound Group and several other related Ross County earthwork complexes are overseen by the National Park Service as the Hopewell Culture National Historic Park. The Hopewell Mound Group is one of seven Ohio Hopewell Ceremonial Earthwork sites presently under consideration by the United States Department of the Interior for nomination as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Description: Photograph showing the front of the Zoar Hotel. The back of the photograph reads: "Zoar Hotel Ruof and Bimiler Proofs Rezin Clark Photographer Bolivar O. 1915." Led by Joseph Bimeler in 1817, a group of Lutheran separatists left the area of Germany known as Wurttemberg and eventually established the small community of Zoar in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. They would become known as the Society of Separatists of Zoar in 1819. After Bimeler's death in 1853, the unity of the village declined, and by 1898 the Zoarites disbanded the society. The remaining residents divided the property, and the community continued to prosper in Zoar. Today, the Ohio Historical Society operates a portion of the town as a historic site. Description: Dated ca. 1895, this broadside advertises price cuts for medicine, toiletries, and soaps sold by Garver Bros. & Co. of Strasbourg, Ohio, in Tuscarawas County. The Garver Brothers, G. Rudolph (Rudy) and G. Albert, operated the store which their father Philip founded in 1866, which eventually sold a wide range of items including dry goods, furniture, groceries, shoes, and much more. Description: Taken by traveling photographer Albert J. Ewing, ca. 1896-1912, this photograph shows a couple and their two young daughters posing in front of a dark backdrop with lace draped to the right. A note etched at the top of the glass plate negative appears to read "Clayton Clark." Like most of Ewing's work, it was likely taken in southeastern Ohio or central West Virginia. Born in 1870 in Washington County, Ohio, near Marietta, Ewing most likely began his photography career in the 1890s. The 1910 US Census and a 1912-1913 directory list him as a photographer. A negative signed "Ewing Brothers" and a picture with his younger brother, Frank, indicate that Frank may have joined the business. After 1916, directories list Albert as a salesman. He died in 1934. The Ewing Collection consists of 5,055 glass plate negatives, each individually housed and numbered. Additionally, the collection includes approximately 450 modern contact prints made from the glass plate negatives. Subjects include infants and young children, elderly people, families, school and religious groups, animals and rural scenes. In 1982, the Ohio Historical Society (now the Ohio History Connection) received the collection, still housed in the original dry plate negative boxes purchased by Albert J. Ewing. Description: Dated ca. 1900, this trade card advertises Clark's Mile-End Spool Cotton thread used for sewing clothing. In the center of the card is a short poem in which Robins can agree on nothing other than Clark's Mile-End is "woman's greatest friend." The poem is framed by a robin nest in the lower left corner, with tree branches and foliage reaching around the frame of the poem, and a robin perched at in the upper right corner. The reverse reads "The proprietors of Clark's Mile End Spool Cotton propose to issue a series of twelve aquarelles from design by the celebrated Parisian artist Hector Giacomelli, illustrative of our native song birds.
