Description: This pipe in effigy (a likeness or representation) of a falcon was excavated from Tremper Mound, a Hopewell culture site located five miles north of Portsmouth in Scioto County. Archaeologist William C. Mills identified this effigy as a "paroquete." The bird stands on the pipe platform with wings folded and wing tips crossed over tail. Its head is turned perpendicular to the long axis of the platform. It has drilled eyes with inset pearls. The tip of tail was broken in prehistoric times. Pipe was broken off the platform, which also broke into pieces. It has been repaired. Some restoration has been done to the platform. The pipe measures approximately 1.66" x 2.5" x 3.25" (4 x 6.4 x 8.4 cm). This pipe is part of a large collection of pipes found at Tremper Mound. The pipes were carved of Ohio pipestone, a silica-based material that can be easily carved when freshly quarried from the hills east of the Scioto River. The pipes represent a variety of animals significant to the Hopewell, including owls, wolves, deer and beaver. Skilled Hopewell craftsmen carved the pipes with flint knives and some are embellished with pearls or copper. In Ohio, the Hopewell Indians (100 B.C.-A.D. 500) built burial mounds and large earthen enclosures in geometric shapes (circles, squares, and octagons) to mark the places where the people gathered periodically to participate in many social and ceremonial events. Some of these sites were quite large--the Newark Earthworks complex extends over a 4-square-mile area. The Hopewell people also maintained a large trade network extending as far as the Rocky Mountains of Wyoming, the Florida coast and Appalachians, and northern Lake Superior. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: This sketchbook, measuring 12 by 10 inches (30.48 by 25.40 cm) when open, is a sample of the work of Samuel Swan Walker. A native of Butler County, Walker (1806-1848) was an itinerant miniaturist during the late 1830s and 1840s. A trained doctor, he made his living traveling throughout the western and northwestern parts of the state painting portraits of well-known Ohioans and giving art lessons to wealthy patrons. This pipe is part of a large collection of pipes found at Tremper Mound. Description: This photograph was taken after the November 24, 1893, fire that destroyed the Henrietta and Park Theaters and Chittenden Hotel and Auditorium. The fire originated in the Henrietta Theater and wind blew the fire east toward the other buildings. Only one person died. The Chittenden Hotel was the residence of Governor McKinley, who was out of town at the time. The fire caused over $1 million in damages. View on Ohio Memory.

Description: Three photographs show Miss Pumpkin Queen Peggy Mayo and her attendants. Mayo was crowned Miss Pumpkin at the 1968 Pumpkin Festival in Circleville, Ohio. The slides measure 2" x 2" (5.08 x 5.08 cm). George R. Haswell, mayor of Circleville, held the first "pumpkin show" in the city in 1903. The show expanded and in 1949 the non-profit group Circleville Pumpkin Show, Inc. was established to manage the show. In addition to displays of pumpkins and other agricultural crops, the Circleville Pumpkin Festival has grown to include pageants for Miss Pumpkin and Little Miss Pumpkin, and contests for baking, pie-eating, and hog-calling. Description: Seven 2" x 2" (5.08 x 5.08 cm) photographs show astronaut Neil Armstrong, comedian Bob Hope, and Ohio Governor James Rhodes in the grandstand at a homecoming parade held for Armstrong in 1969. More than 80,000 supporters greeted Armstrong upon his return to Wapakoneta, Ohio on September 6, 1969. Hope served as marshal for the event, and guests included "Tonight Show" sidekick Ed McMahon, and Dr. Albert Sabin, who invented the polio vaccine. Hope joked with the crowd that Armstrong was adjusting well to life on Earth after his space visit, "but he keeps throwing his shoes out the window and eating toothpaste," referring to the system of trash disposal on early flights and the practice of packaging astronauts' food in tubes. Neil A. Armstrong (b. 1930), the first man to walk on the moon, was born in Wapakoneta. He received Bachelor and Master of Science degrees in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University. After serving as a naval aviator from 1949 to 1952, Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) in 1955. For the next 17 years he worked for NACA and its successor agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). As a research pilot at NASA's Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, he was a project pilot on many pioneering high-speed aircraft. Armstrong transferred to astronaut status in 1962 and was assigned as command pilot for the Gemini 8 mission, which was launched on March 16, 1966. As spacecraft commander for Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission, Armstrong gained the distinction of being the first man to land a craft on the moon and first to step on its surface. Bob Hope (1903-2003), born Leslie Townes Hope, moved to Cleveland from England with his family in 1907. After graduating from East High School in Cleveland, Hope spent time as an amateur boxer before entering show business. He worked in vaudeville and on Broadway before turning to radio and then television. Hope first began performing for troops stationed overseas in World War I, and continued through the first Gulf War. He starred in more than fifty films and was awarded five special Oscars for humanitarian work and in 1985 he was awarded the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors for Lifetime Achievement.
